Anholt is a historically independent city in Münsterlandwho made 1975 in the parish Isselburg rose.

Anholt lies in the border area between the former duchy of Münster (today Westphalia), the Duchy of Kleve (today Rhineland) and the rule of Geldern (today the Netherlands) and was fought over but also strongly fortified since the Middle Ages. The residence town of the Anholt rulership, later the Principality of Salm-Salm, has one of the most magnificent castle buildings and gardens on the Lower Rhine with the moated Anholt castle.
