Map of Annaburg

background

A hunting lodge has been located here since the Middle Ages. The place was first mentioned in the 14th century under the name Lochau. With the establishment of a renaissance castle as a widow's seat for the Danish Princess Anna of Denmark, wife of Elector August I of Saxony, the name was changed to Annaburg. Thanks to its long history as the seat of the Saxon electors, the place and its surroundings today offer a variety of cultural and historical excursion destinations.

After World War II, the Annaburger Heide became a military training area for the army and later also for the air force. Annaburg became a garrison location with an officer's school and is characterized by numerous military buildings.

Since the most recent incorporations, a total of fourteen districts belong to the city, of which Prettin is most interesting for visitors.

Stifel and the end of the world
Stifelbrunnen Annaburg
The local, mathematically gifted priest, Michael Stifel, calculated the date of the end of the world on Sunday, October 19, 1533, 8 o'clock from the Bible. Against addressing Luther from nearby Wittenberg, the elector was also alarmed, Stifel spread his prophecy with success. People gave away their belongings (there weren't any buyers anyway), the end seemed near. We don't know what happened that Sunday morning, it was definitely not the end of the world. Stifel was no longer seen in town and later appeared at the University of Jena, where he made scientific contributions to the description of the logarithm and the use of negative numbers. Students mocked his name and started drinking beer out of boots. Talking a boot entered the general vocabulary.
