Arachova (Greek: Αράχωβα) is a place in Central Greece, at the southern foot of the Parnassos massif, and one of the largest ski resorts in Greece on the edge of the Parnassos Mountains.

Arachova belongs like the one nearby Delphi to the ancient region Phocis (modern Greek Fokida). According to the modern administrative structure, however, it is in the far west of the regional district Boeotia and belongs to the parish Distomo-Arachova-Antikyra based in Distomo.

During the Greek War of Independence, a battle took place near Arachova in November 1826, in which the outnumbered Greek freedom fighters, led by Georgios Karaiskakis, victorious against the Ottoman troops.

By train

The nearest train stop is 38 km away Livadia (on the Athens – Lianokladi – Thessaloniki line). From there you can continue to Arachova by bus or taxi.

By bus

KTEL Fokidas offers five daily bus connections from / to Amfissa and Itea (each about Delphi) at. KTEL Livadias drives from Livadia according to Arachova. Coming from Athens you have to change trains in Livadia.

In the street

Arachova is on National Road 48 between Delphi (12 km) and Livadia (33 km). As more than 400 meters of altitude have to be overcome when coming from Delphi, and even more than 800 from Livadia, the route is very winding. From the north, a provincial road with extreme hairpin bends leads from Eptalofos through the Parnassus Mountains to Arachova.

Practical advice

The municipal administration is in the neighboring town of Distomo, which on July 10, 1944 was the target of a "retaliation" by the German Wehrmacht. More at the Wikipedia. On the way to the monastery of Osios Loukas one comes through Distomo, on a hill above the place a memorial commemorates this act.
