Archaea Olympia is a city ofElis.
To know
Archaia Olympia is certainly much less famous than Olympia. The modern city is less attractive than the archaeological site, but it is an important tourist center as it is attached to the ancient city.
Geographical notes
The city is crossed by two rivers, the Cladeo from north to south and separating the city from the site of Olympia to join the Alfeo river which flows south. Both rivers are linked by a myth.
How to orient yourself
The town, of modest size, develops along the main street that develops on the north-south axis and is also the place to find almost all the souvenir shops and museums. The archaeological area is located very close (reachable in a few minutes on foot) to the south east of the town center.
How to get
By plane
The nearest domestic airports are at Calamata, about 115 km and Araxos airport close to Patras.
By car
Olympia can be reached from Patras on the N33 (about 100 km), from Tripoli on the N74 (about 115 km), from Kalamata on the E65 (about 115 km).
The most important port nearby is located at Patras (110 km). While the closest one is a Katakolo (34 km) where numerous cruise ships dock, and passengers arrive by bus in Olympia.
On the train
- 1 Olympia station. Olympia station has connections only with Pyrgos (30 min).
By bus
- 2 Bus station. The only possible connection is with Pyrgos via several daily buses.
How to get around
The city is very small for this reason it only makes sense to visit it on foot.
