Areopoli is a small community and was traditionally the main town of the Mani in the west of the region Laconia.
background
The Mani region is administered by the municipality Anatoliki Mani with administrative headquarters in Gythio. Nevertheless, the place is still valid today Areopoli, City of the (god of war) Ares, as its actual main town. Until recently Areopoli was still the seat of the municipality Itylo or Oitylo.
In the Ottoman period one resided here Bey, a ruler or tribal leader. As such, he was one of the inhabitants of the Mani, and he had to carry out the orders of his superior pasha without neglecting the interests of his clan. The last BeyPetros Mavromichalis, called Petrobey, a memorial was erected here, probably due to his call for the Greeks' struggle for freedom from March 1821.
Despite all development measures, the Mani is an economically underdeveloped area. According to the opinion (at least of the maniots) there is the world's best olive oil, but very few modern jobs. As a result, the residential towers in many communities are either only inhabited by older people or are even abandoned.
