Gythio is a city in eastern Mani in the region Laconia. Since 2010 the administrative center of the municipality has been in Gythio Eastern mani (Anatoliki Mani).

Gythio, also Gytheion, Greek: Γύθειο, was the port of in ancient times Sparta. The city was founded by according to mythology Heracles and ApolloAnother legend relates to the small island of Marathonisi south of the port of Gythio. - In the city itself there are a number of beautiful 19th century houses.

To note: The beaches around Gythio are used by the hawksbill sea turtles (Caretta caretta) for their eggs. The animals are protected by the Washington Convention on the Protection of Species.
