Laconia (Λακωνία / Lakonía) is a regional district in the southeast of the Peloponnese in Greece. It borders in the north Arcadia. In the west forms the Taygetos Mountains with the 2,407 m high Hagios Iliad the limit to Messenia. The capital of the region is Sparta.

If you take the outline of the Peloponnese as a hand, the Laconian Gulf lies between the index finger and middle finger. The index finger is formed by the foothills of the Parnon Mountains, the southernmost point is Cape Kremidi. On the middle finger lies the higher Taygetos Mountains, it forms a natural barrier to the south to the peninsula Mani, the southernmost point is Cape Tenaro. The flows through the fertile plain between the two mountain ranges Evrotas (Eurotas).

The fertile plain in the valley of the Evrotas with the municipalities of Sparti and Evrotas is the cultural and economic center of Laconia. Olive plantations and orange groves are dominant here.
The Mani region is divided into three areas:
- the outer mani north of Areopoli until after Kalamata in the region Messenia,
- the inner Mani on the Messenian Gulf on the west side of the peninsula with Areopolis and Itilo
- the eastern Mani on the laconic gulf with the place Gythio.
Due to the geographical remoteness, some rites and customs in this area could last longer and develop differently than in the rest of the country. Are noticeable in the architecture Defense towers, multi-storey houses with small windows, designed to defend their residents. There was blood revenge at the beginning of the 20th century, there are still ancient songs of the dead.
The Mani also has olives, often wild trees, but the oil from their fruits is valued. In the open landscape there is Scrub vegetation before, typical representatives are the strawberry tree and the Judas tree in addition to bay leaves, pistachios and holm oaks.

Laconia has so far been little developed for tourism. Next Monemvasia with its medieval streets, is the small island off the coast Elafonisus an insider tip for lovers of fine dune beaches with turquoise blue water.

Of the archaeological sites, the ruined city is without a doubt Mystras the highlight of Laconia. From the ancient metropolis Sparta on the other hand, there is very little left.
