Artenara is not only the highest, but also one of the oldest places in Gran Canaria. It is said to have been inhabited since the Stone Age. Some of the houses have been built into the rock for centuries. These caves are still inhabited today, but nowadays they are of course equipped with every comfort. Artenara is a popular destination for visitors.

Hike to the Cruz de Tejeda
A hike with a wonderful view after Tejeda, Roque Bentayga and Roque Nublo. 14km there and back.
The route runs along the northern edge of the Caldera de Tejeda volcanic basin. The view is correspondingly beautiful. Our route begins in Artenara, leads over the Riscos de Chapí - opposite the Roque Bentayga - and on through the pine forest of Cueva Caballero, until it ends in Cruz de Tejeda. Good description below nortedegrancanaria.es (with photos) or more detailed.
Most of them start at Cruz de Tejeda, the other way around. We walked from Artenara to the Degllada de las Palomas and back. You can vary there and back. Sometimes more on the edge, then again in the forest. End with a contemplation.
