Plaza de la Constitución

From the indigenous people Arehucas called the city a center of resistance against the conquerors. Completely destroyed in 1478, the new settlers did not return to the city until 1504. Sugar cane cultivation used to predominate here, which has resulted in the construction of many rum distilleries. Today the largest rum factory in the Canary Islands is located in Arucas, Arehucaswhose operation can also be visited. Bananas have been mainly grown in the area since the 19th century.

  • Iglesia de San Juan Bautista. The neo-Gothic church that dominates and towers over the cityscape. The construction of the church from black lava stone and a 60 m high tower began in 1909. The first service was held eight years later. However, it was not fully completed until 1977. It is considered a masterpiece of the Canarian stonemasons. Inside, the wooden sculpture of a reclining Christ should be mentioned, which was created by the local sculptor Manuel Ramos González around 1940.
  • Plaza de la Constitución. With the surrounding buildings, especially the town hall and the market halls.

  • Destilería Arehucas. The rum factory on the outskirts was founded in 1884. The white and brown rum and various liqueurs that are made here are very popular in Gran Canaria and Spain. Factory tours take place Monday to Friday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Affiliated is a museum, open daily from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., where you can learn everything about the history of the factory and rum production.   • Montaña de Arucas. Approx. 12 km north of Arucas, 412 m high. The restaurant is located on the top of a former volcanic cone Meson de la Montaña, where you can enjoy the wonderful panoramic view over the island while eating. The road there begins at the cathedral.
