Ashdod (Hebrew: אשדוד, English: Ashdod arabic:إسدود, DMG Isdūd) is a israeli Port city on the Southern coastal plain, it lies between Tel Aviv and Ashkelon. With around 240,000 inhabitants, Ashdod is one of the largest cities in the country.

background

Ashdod has a long history and was founded around 1000 BC. inhabited by the Philistines. The city belonged to Pentapolis the Philistine. It is said that the Philistines captured the Ark of the Covenant from the Israelites and brought it to Ashdod before they were forced to return it. Today, however, only a few traces of the ancient city have survived.

Modern Ashdod was not founded until after World War II and has grown rapidly in recent decades, primarily due to Jewish immigrants from the Soviet Union, Morocco and several other countries.

  • The 3 port of Ashdod is on the northern edge of the city. There are ferry connections to Limassol and after Salerno. Cruise ship passengers must take a shuttle from the ship to the city. An immigration control takes place when leaving the port area.
  • The marina 4 Blue Marina or Ashdod Marina is not far from the city center on the beach and has more than 500 berths.
