Azuaga is a city in the province Badajoz in the autonomous region of Extremadura.

Azuaga has an ancient history. There are traces from the 3rd millennium BC. BC, the Neolithic period. The Romans called the city Municipium Iulium Ugultuniacum. In the Moorish times the city was called Zuwaga. It was ended by the reconquest in 1236. Azuaga grew in the 15th to 18th centuries. Houses, palaces and churches were built. From 1894 to 1947 the Azuaga mine produced lead and vanadium.

The 66 km away Zafra has a train station. From there you can go to Seville or Merida drive.

  • Iglesia parroquial de Ntra. Sra. de la Consolación. From the 16th century. Considered an important church in the Badajoz province. It is the next largest after the cathedral in Badajoz. The style is Gothic. It has a magnificent portal with fine decorative motifs.

  • Iglesia de la Merced. Built in the Gothic Mudejar style in the 15th century.
