Barbizon is a municipality of about 1,000 inhabitants located on the edge of the Fontainebleau forest, in Seine et Marne south-east of Paris.
Understand
Originally a lumberjack village, Barbizon enjoyed major artistic influence during the XIXe century. Painters like Jean-Francois Millet, Theodore Rousseau or Jean-Baptiste Corot favor outdoor painting with unspoiled nature. The movement adopted by these numerous artists will subsequently take the form of barbizon school. As a result, Barbizon is often nicknamed the "village of painters".
Each year, it is more than 35,000 tourists tourists who come to discover this world-famous character village.

- 1 Departmental Museum of Barbizon Painters (Auberge Ganne) 92 Grande Rue, 33 1 60 66 22 27, e-mail : [email protected] sea.- Mon. : 10 h - 12 h 30 and14 h - 17 h 30 (July and August until 18 h). – The museum brings together an important collection of the works of painter from the Barbizon school. It has found its place in the old Ganne inn, where many artists stay in the middle of the XIXe century as well as in Théodore Rousseau's house-studio, two historic places.
- 2 Jean-François Millet Museum 27 Grande Rue, 33 1 60 66 21 55, e-mail : [email protected] – Private museum occupying the former workshop of Jean-Francois Millet, illustrious painter of the Barbizon school. There is a large collection of scenes from rural life that he painted, all in preserved period premises.

However, the ambiance is often considered poor and the prices quite high. Despite everything, free shuttles are set up on Friday and Saturday for Fontainebleau and Milly-la-Forêt.
