Fontainebleau is a nice cozy little town with lots of street cafes. It is in the department Seine-et-Marne in the region Île-de-France. The city is about 65 km south of Paris and is best known for its 16th century castle and forest. The latter served, among other things, as a place of inspiration for numerous artists.

There are dozens of ticket offices in the Gare de Lyon, but only one sells the right tickets, namely the one labeled "Banlieu"!

Fontainebleau Castle
In 998, Ludwig IX. build a “small” hunting seat here. But soon afterwards, Fontainebleau was forgotten. It was only King Franz I who discovered the picturesque place for himself and had the castle expanded from 1528 onwards. From then on, Fontainebleau became the ancestral home of the French kings. It is the first Renaissance building in France.
The Chateau Fontainebleau has been part of the UNESCO world cultural heritage.

Worthwhile destinations in the area include the artists' village on the edge of the Fontainebleau forest Barbizon, after which the eponymous Barbizon School, a trend in French landscape painting that preceded Impressionism, founded the village Milly-la-Foret with the final resting place of Jean Cocteau and the unique, by several artists of the Nouveau Réalisme created walk-in artwork Le Cyclope, the Vaux-le-Vicomte castle, which served as a model for Versailles at the time, and the remains of the medieval castle in Blandy-les-Tours, the last active one Glass blowing the Île-de-France in Soisy-sur-Ecole, the town Etampes, and much more.
