History

Founded in the 10th century as a defensive stronghold in In the Bardzkie Mountains over the Nysa Kłodzka gorge. The castle was mentioned for the first time by the chronicler Cosmas in 1096 as destroyed by the Czech prince Brzetysław II.

The Polishness of this area is evidenced by the fact that only Polish knights were the castellans of Bardo (Sobiesław in 1203, Dzierżko-Peregryn in 1223, Bogusław Jarosławowic in 1261, Jan son of Żerzuch in 1269, Jarosław Mroczkowice of Owiesno in 1283). ), and most of the surrounding towns already existed and were inhabited by the Slavic population. The castle was rebuilt after the Czech invasion, as evidenced by the records from 1155 and 1245. There was already a chapel in the castle, mentioned for the first time in 1189 as handed over by bishop Żyrosław II to the Order of St. John of Jerusalem (Sovereign Knight Order of Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem called Rhodes and Maltese). In 1210, bishop Wawrzyniec handed over the church to regular canons from Kamieniec. According to tradition, as early as around 1200, the cult of Mary was spreading here, associated with the miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary, which is the greatest treasure of Bard to this day. Around 1290, Bardo ceased to be a castellany. In connection with the construction of a new brick castle on Kalwaria (Góra Bardzka) by Bolek II, the area of the castle was bought in 1301 by the Cistercians and from that moment until 1810 they were the owners of the village.

In 1322 - it was granted city rights and was within the borders of the Duchy of Świdnica and Jawor. Then it was successively in the Duchy of Ziębice, the Duchy of Legnica and Brzeg and from 1742 - in the Kingdom of Prussia in the Ząbkowice poviat (Frankenstein poviat), then in GermanyFrom the mid-fourteenth century, Bardo developed thanks to its location and more and more often pilgrims coming here.

In 1874, a railway line was built WroclawKłodzko. The railway line from Wrocław reached Bard in 1872. The townspeople used the train stop built in the suburb of Przyłęk, where the current line ended. For 2 years, a 270-meter-long tunnel under Tunelowa Góra was built and a ledge was forged in the slope of the Nysa Kłodzka valley. Mainly foreign workers, z ItalianThe railway station in Bardo was built 30 years later in 1905, which was related to the increasing pilgrimage and tourist traffic in the city itself. Currently, it is a passenger stop on the railway line No. 276 from Wrocław Główny to Międzylesie (at the state border).

In 1945, the town became part of Poland and the previous population was displaced to Germany. Due to the small area and small number of inhabitants, it lost its municipal rights, in 1954 it was granted the status of a settlement and in 1969 it became a town again. In the years 1945-1954 it was a village in the Ząbkowicki County in the Wrocław Province.

The present Bardo is a small summer resort specializing in children's camps and an important center of tourism and pilgrimage. There is also a small paper and furniture industry.
