The oblast Belgorod located in Central Russia. In the west it borders on the Ukraine, in the east to the Russian oblasts Kursk and Voronezh.

The oblast is in the Central black earth region. In this Black earth belt or Chernozem also lies the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly. It is caused by an extremely powerful iron ore deposit that also extends into Belgorod Oblast.
