Kharkiv, ukr. Харків, russ. Харькoв is a city in northeastern the Ukraine. With a population of 1.5 million, Kharkiv is behind Kiev the second largest city in the country.

background

Kharkiv was founded in the 17th century to strengthen the southern border of the Russian Empire. In the 18th century the city became the administrative center of a governorate. With the construction of railways and the mining of iron ore and coal, Kharkiv became an industrial center. One of the most famous companies is Malyshev. The plant, founded in 1895 to build locomotives, later produced the legendary battle tank T34. During the course of the Second World War, the city was fiercely contested and largely destroyed because of its industry and its strategic location. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Kharkiv has been part of Ukraine, but the majority of the population is of Russian descent.

Kharkiv hosted three preliminary round matches in June 2012 European Football Championship 2012.
