Bir Wahid (also Bir Wahed, Arabic:بئر واحد‎, Biʾr Wāḥid, „Well one“) Is a water source in the north of the Great Egyptian Sand Sea about 15 kilometers southwest of the city Siwa.

The warm sulphurous spring was discovered by Russian geologists in 1967 as part of an oil search. Today she irrigates a small garden, but it has now become overgrown. However, the former tenant no longer exists after he was forbidden to charge an entrance fee for the source.

getting there

The journey can only be made with an all-terrain four-wheel drive vehicle. The spring is usually part of an excursion to the northern part of the great Egyptian sand desert near Siwa. Fossils and the remains of a petrified forest can also be found on the tour about 20 km southeast of Bir Wahid.

Lake in the north of Biʾr Wāḥid

Around the 1 source(29 ° 7 ′ 20 ″ N.25 ° 26 ′ 2 ″ E) a garden was once laid out. The approximately 30 ° warm water pours into a small basin that can also be used for bathing. A short distance from this pool is a stone hut where you can change clothes.

There are a few palm trees near the source, the rest of the area is almost entirely occupied by reeds.

Except for the northeast, the source is surrounded by limestone mountains.

About 800 meters north of the source there is a sand dune behind 2 lake(29 ° 7 '39 "N.25 ° 26 ′ 20 ″ E)which is fed from the local spring. The sight of the lake surrounded by sand dunes is delightful. Reeds also grow on the shores of the lake. There is an abandoned shelter on the north bank.

Drinks and food must be brought along. In any case, waste should be taken back with you. Immediately at the source pond there are some palm trees under which a picnic can be carried out.

It is entirely possible to spend the night at a certain distance from the source. A permit is required for this (see under Siwa) as well as tents and sleeping bags. Because of the risk of mosquitoes, you should never stay overnight directly at the source or at the lake.
