background

history

Siwa is a fairly young city. The two main locations of the valley were well into the first half of the 20th century Shali and Aghūrmī. In 1820 the wealthy residents of Shali began to build their homes in the east of the castle hill. Since 1944, the population of Shali has been resettled to the city of Siwa, where almost the entire population of Siwa now lives. Siwa received city rights in 1962.

orientation

East of the mountain of Shali is the market square, Mīdān es-Sūq. To the north of this market are most of the public facilities such as the mosques, police, bus stop, bank and hospital. Most of the restaurants and hotels are located to the north and east of the market square. Extensive military and sports facilities can be found in the south of the city.

The road to the east at the northeast corner of the market square leads to Aghūrmī (Aghurmi St.). The Siwa Paradise Hotel is also located on this street. A street leads to the southeast corner of the market square (Tortar St.) in a southeasterly direction et-Takrūr. In between is the Sebūkha St.. The street on the west side of the market (Anwar el-Sadat St.) leads to the south of the city.

Orientation towards Aghūrmī and et-Takrūr is quite easy, as modern green street lamps have been placed on the roadsides.

The street in the northwest corner of the market leads first to the Sidi Suleiman Mosque with a gas station opposite and a little further to the bank, the police, the tourist information and the bus stop. The bus stop and the tourist information are at the end of the from Marsā Maṭrūḥ coming trunk road.

Shālī is the Islamic old town in the west of Siwa with its traditional clay buildings. Until the middle of the 20th century, it was the only permanently inhabited settlement in the valley besides Aghūrmī. The place was used earlier. Rock tombs were dug in the hills of Shālī as far back as Greco-Roman times.

Numerous graves were laid on the Gebel el-Mautā burial hill in the north of the city in the 26th ancient Egyptian dynasty and the Ptolemaic period. The colored decoration in a few tombs was executed as a mixed style of Egyptian and Greek elements. The hill Aghūrmī was the seat of the oracle temple of Amun. The oracle priests here awarded Alexander the Great the sonship of God - an important prerequisite for being able to become king of Egypt. In Umm ʿUbeida are the ruins of the second Amun temple. It had an important function as the starting point of the public processional oracle that led to the Amun temple in Aghūrmī. The Cleopatra or Sun Spring is also located 900 meters south of Umm ʿUbeida.

Et-Takrūr is a village in the north and east of the same name Gebel et-Takrūr. The hill was used as a quarry and burial site in the past. In the summer months rheumatism and arthritis are treated here in the hot sand.

The limestone rock on which the guest house stands is historically significant. This place, according to a later sheikh Qaṣr Ḥassūna, Arabic:قصر حسونة, Or after the guest house Qaṣr el-Malik Fuʿād, Arabic:قصر الملك فؤاد, Called, played for the founded in 1837 Sanūsī brotherhood, a religious reform movement Salafist Expression, an important role. Your founder, Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī es-Sanūsī (1787-1859) made a pilgrimage in 1837 Meccaafter studying in Moroccan Fez from 1821 and later at the el-Azhar University in Cairo had completed. In Mecca he met the theologian Aḥmad ibn Idrīs el-Fāsī, the founder of the Idrīsīya / Chadrīya brotherhood. After the death of Aḥmad el-Fāsīs in 1837, this brotherhood split up, the most important branch should form the Sanūsīya in the future. Since Sanūsī with his teaching in Hejaz was unsuccessful, he moved west and settled in Siwa in 1838 on the hill Qaṣr Ḥassūna. He used two caves here, one as a dwelling, the other for prayer. It is reported that he used the prayer niche, den Mihrab, dug out of the rock with his own hands. In contrast to the Hejaz, his teaching aroused great interest among the Siwans, who became ardent followers of this teaching. Later on, Sanūsī shifted the center of his movement to the Cyrenaica in the Northeast Libyawhere he died in 1859.[2]

At the end of the 19th century, Sheikh Ḥassūna Manṣūr settled on the hill with his entourage including his harem and had a fortified house, the Qaṣr Ḥassūna, built here. But he gave up with the governorate of el-Buḥeira because he was reluctant to pay taxes to the Egyptian state. The sent 50 soldiers in 1896, but they besieged his property unsuccessfully because friends of the Ḥassūna continued to provide him with essentials. Sheikh Aḥmad ibn Idrīs of the Sanūsī brotherhood in Libyan was called el-Ǧaghbūb (el-Jaghbūb, el-Jaghbūb) to mediate in this conflict. Idrīs ’influence or that of the Sanūsī brotherhood were still large enough at that time to persuade Sheikh Ḥassūna Manṣūr to give up and pay the taxes, but only on the condition that the taxes did not have to be paid retrospectively. A few months later, Ḥassūna Manṣūr died and with him a hundred Siwaners in a fight that was sparked off by a dispute over some goats.[2]

In the years that followed, the Sanūsī Brotherhood was able to maintain control over large parts of the Eastern Sahara. They were able to successfully assert themselves against the new Italian colonial rulers between 1911 and 1915 because they were the local tribes Jihad could unite. On the side of Turkey and the German Empire, they were to open fronts against the armed forces of France and England during the First World War. The armed forces of the Brotherhood fell over Siwa in 1915 ed-Dāchla and el-Chārga one, but were in battle in March 1916 es-Sallūm decisively defeated by Anglo-Egyptian troops.

The Qaṣr Ḥassūna was used as the district chairman's residence until well into the 1920s. King Fuʿād I had it demolished in 1928 and replaced with his guest house.

General information
