The Blue Hole Natural Monument is a natural monument in Belize District in Belize.
background
The Blue Hole, with its 300 meters diameter and 145 meters depth, is easy to see from the air. Here you can see a dark blue spot in the turquoise water. The monument is under the administration of the Belize Audubon Society [1]
history
The monument was created by a sinkhole that was formed at the end of the last ice age. This also opened access to an underground cave system. When the water level rose, this and the sinkhole were flooded. In 1971 the Nlue Hole suddenly became famous through Jacques Cousteau, who reported on it in one of his reports. Since then, this has been one of the world's most famous diving destinations. The Blue Hole has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.
landscape
The underwater landscape offers a 145 meter deep vertically sloping reef, which from 33 meters depth also gives access to an underground cave system. Since it was above sea level for a very long time, there are numerous stalactites here.
Flora and fauna
On the steep slopes there is a fantastic world of corals with numerous fish and crustaceans. But larger fish such as tiger or hammerhead sharks can also be found here
