Bugøynes is a village of the Norway.

Geographical notes

The village is located along the Varangerfjorden, a large bay off the coast of Barents Sea (a part ofArctic Ocean), near the border with the Russia. The village is located approximately 500 km north of the Arctic Circle; it is populated by many Finnish foreign-speaking residents, which lead to the named village Lille-Finland or "Little Finland".

Background

Bugøynes was colonized by the Norwegians in the 17th century, but later abandoned. It has been repopulated by people from the Finland in the 18th century. Most of the trading in this part of Finnmark takes place at Kirkenes. Workplaces in Bugøynes include fishing, salmon and other fish processing, reindeer meat processing.

By plane

Links from Oslo to Ivalo or Kirkenes. Norwegian Airlines and Finnair both have flights to Ivalo, while flying to Kirkenes is easy with SAS or Norwegian Airlines. It is possible to rent a car from both airports.

By car

Before the road was built in Bugøynes in 1962, the main link between Bugøynes and the rest of the world was by sea.

There are no gas stations in the village; buy fuel a Näätämö or a Nuorgam.

On boat

By bus

From Kirkenes: services of bus daily (Boreal Bus, line 64) leading to Brannsletta, at the gates of the village. From here a bus service on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays to Bugøynes (Flexx 825 bus).

  • Bugøynes Chapel.
  • Pier of Pleym (The Pleym Pier) (Open upon request). Restored bridges dating back to the 19th century with a museum exhibit showing the old coastal culture.
  • House of the Lassi (Lassigården). House of culture dating back to 1850, now used as a museum and home to the public library.
  • 1 Ranvika (Ranvika Bird Sanctuary). The largest bird sanctuary in Sør-Varanger is about a 90-minute walk from Bugøynes. The path to the sanctuary is well signposted.
  • 2 Norway king crab (Norway King Crab). Red king crab, which can weigh up to 10 kilograms (22 lbs), is caught and raised here. Bugøynes is a center in Norway for commercial fishing for this delicacy.
  • Midnight Sun . This natural spectacle is called the midnight sun: the sun reaches its lowest level for the summer period until 01:00.
