The Castle Plesse is a partly dilapidated castle complex on the slope of the northwestern edge of the Göttingen Forest above the Leinetal a few kilometers north of Goettingen. The small town of Eddigehausen lies at the foot of the castle ruins.
Mentioned for the first time in 1015, the 1000th anniversary of the castle will be celebrated in 2015.
getting there
By train
The nearest train station is in Norten-Hardenberg, but the train station in. is cheaper due to the regional bus connections Goettingen, from where you can take the bus to Eddigehausen.
By bus
From the central bus station in Göttingen by bus 185 to Eddigehausen, from there on foot up to the Plesse.
In the street
Leave the B3 between Göttingen and Nörten-Hardenberg at the Angerstein / Reyershausen / Bovenden exit, from there the Plesse is signposted.
On foot
The Solling-Harz-Querweg leads over Plesse Castle. If you arrive by bus, take this route for the steep ascent from Eddigehausen up to the Plesse.
mobility
Above the castle stands a 1 parking spot available, which is quickly occupied when the weather is nice, burials in the cemetery or events on the Plesse. Then it is necessary to park in the village of Eddigehausen and use the (steep) footpath.
The access to the Plesse and the paths within the castle complex are rather difficult for people with restricted mobility. A forest path with rough steps leads from the parking lot to the lower gate of the Plesse, which cannot be used with a walker or wheelchair. However, the parallel access road to the parking lot is narrow and confusing and should not be used by pedestrians if possible. A limited number of 2 Disabled parking spaces is located right at the castle to the right of the road (before or in the curve on the access road to the main parking lot on the right side of the road).
Tourist Attractions
Of course, the entire facility, which consists of individual buildings and courtyards, is worth seeing:
- By the 1 Lower gate If you enter the castle complex, the partially crumbled one stretches to the right of the path Outer curtain wall and the 2 Caning garden along.
- To the Arcades along, some of whose arches allow a view down into the forest, follow the path to Middle gate with the 3 Gate house .
- After passing through the gate house, the further uphill path now leads through the 4 Burggartenwhose beds are planted with medieval medicinal and culinary herbs. Labels on the plants help with the botanical classification.
- Directly after the Burggarten you get to the 5 Central courtyard . To the right, above the wall above the castle garden, the path now leads into the inner courtyard and thus into the main castle. Here was that too 6 Upper gate.
- In the area of the main castle is the 7 Keep, which offers an excellent view of the Leinetal.

The Plesseforst surrounding the castle has been an extensive cemetery for a number of years and is therefore well developed with paths, so that a visit to the Plesse can be followed by a short or long hike. You can also combine this with a visit to the outdoor pool in Reyershausen to the east, across the forest from the parking lot on the Plesser is only a 2 km hiking trail.
About 400 meters east of the castle there is a 1 Forest playground, here is also a barbecue area.
