Geography
The country is mostly mountainous. The highest peak is Munku-Sardyk (3,491 m above sea level) in the Eastern Sayan range. The greater part (60% of the coastline) of Lake Baikal is located in the territory of Buryatia. The most important rivers are Witim (tributary of Lena) and Selenga.
Climate
The climate in the Republic is strongly continental, winters are dry and cold, summers are short and hot. The average temperature is -22 ° C in winter and 18.5 ° C in summer.
History
In 1703, Buryatia was incorporated into the State of Moscow under the treaty with Emperor Peter I. In the years 1891–1916, the Trans-Siberian Railway was led through the territory of Buryatia. In the years 1921–1922, two Buryat-Mongolian Autonomous Oblasts (one in the Russian SFSR, the other in the Far East Republic) were established, which on May 30, 1923 were merged into the Buryat-Mongolian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. In 1958 the name was changed to Buryat ASSR, and in 1992 the Republic of Buryat was established as part of the Russian Federation.
