The resort Cala d’Or ("Golden Bay") is located in the southeast of the Balearic Island Mallorca. The distance after Palma de Mallorca is about 60 kilometers.

background

Cala d’Or belongs to the municipality of Santanyí. The district in the east of Cala Ferrera and Cala Serena already belong to the municipality of Felanitx. Cala d’Or belongs to the municipality of Santanyí. The part east of Avenida Felanitx around Cala Ferrera and Cala Serena already belongs to the municipality of Felanitx.

The place Cala d’Or unfolds along the coastline on three semicircular headlands or districts, called: Cala d’Or (center), Cala Egos (west) and Cala Ferrara (east).

The rugged rocky coast is broken through by several small bays with fine sandy beaches. From east to west these are: Cala Serena, Cala Ferrera, Cala Esmeralda, Cala Gran (the largest beach in the town), the namesake Cala d’Or (also called Caló de ses Dones), Calla Llonga or Cala d’es Forti, Caló d'es Pou, Cala Galera, Cala Egos and Calo des Llamp. A mini train runs regularly between these bays and beaches.

The center of the village is on both sides of the Avenida Boulevard d'Or between the Complejo de Font Major (building complex) and the Plaza de Ibiza (las Columnas) north of Cala d'Or and Cala Gran. There are more shops, restaurants and bars in the northeast along the S'Espalmador near Cala Ferrera and Cala Esmeralda, in the southwest along the Avenida de Marina near Cala Egos, as well as along the Avenida de Cala LLonga in the Baixada al Port and in the marina.

Cala d'Or is a town that has relied entirely on tourism, but in a gentle way. The huge hotel castles are completely missing. They are small and manageable systems. The village is reminiscent of Ibiza, where you can find similar systems. It fits that life takes place around the pedestrian zone. Many shops and bars invite you to linger here. The prices are in the upper segment.

The fishing port Portopetro can be reached by bus or car in five minutes.

The town center is very busy in the summer months, but not overcrowded like other tourist centers on Mallorca. In the pedestrian zone near Avenida Boulevard d'Or there are a large number of shops, bars and restaurants with local and international cuisine.

The Marina Porto Cari, located in the largest bay of Cala Llonga, offers berths for exclusive yachts and charter boats, as well as protection from storms. There are also many exclusive restaurants and bars there.

Many buildings in Cala d’Or are painted white in accordance with Mediterranean tradition and have flat, cubic shapes in their construction Ibiza-Style designed. This is not by chance, because the Ibizan architect Josep Costa Ferrer, who planned the town in the early 1930s, was inspired by his homeland.

The main access for motor vehicles is via roundabouts with traffic islands, which are decorated with various sculptures or decorated with plants.

In the street

  • from Palma de Mallorca via the MA-19A motorway to Llucmajor. It goes over the road MA-19 Campos to Santanyí, as well as further after S'Alqueria Blanca. In S'Alqueria Blanca there are two equivalent options: 1. To the northeast on the MA-4012 road Calonge and from there to the southwest on the MA-4013 road to Cala d’Or. or 2. to the southwest on the MA-19 road Portopetro (Fishing port). From Portopetro, a short coastal road, Avenida Sa Talaia, leads to Carrer Cala d'Or Industrial and then to Carrer Principal, which leads around the Porto de Cala d’Or (marina) directly to the center of Cala d’Or. All buses mostly use the second variant, because on this route the larger hotels can be approached one after the other like on a string of pearls. Typical of the Anglo-American system are the one-way streets and the numerous numbered roundabouts with traffic islands that are decorated with various sculptures or decorated with plants, so that orientation is easy and you can get on quickly.
