East Calcutta is a district of the city of Calcutta.

East Calcutta basically covers new growth areas on the eastern side of the metropolis and is an area that is still growing. It houses the Calcutta IT hub, commercial emporiums and amusement parks. Science City is a major attraction. Salt Lake Stadium is an important gatherer of the occasional crowd. A large number of hospitals attract patients from the metropolis and beyond. Several new hotels have sprung up. It covers Rajarhat, Jyoti Basu Nagar, Bidhannagar and the areas around the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass.


How to orient yourself

Below is a list of the main landmarks in the area:

  • 1 Tangra (o New Chinatown) (On Park Circus Connector, turn north near D.N.Dey Homeopathic College & Hospital at the Topsia bus stop). Tangra together with Tiretta Bazaar (old Chinatown) is the only Chinatown in India. The location was once home to 20,000 ethnic Chinese, now the population has dropped to around 2,000. The traditional occupation of the Chinese community here had worked in the nearby tanning industry and Chinese restaurants. The area is still known for Chinese restaurants where many people flock to taste traditional Chinese and Indian-Chinese food. Historically, there were many opiates in this area (now opium is illegal). 
  • 2 International bus terminal, Karunamoyee. l Calcutta bus service-Dhaka operate from here. 
  • 3 Milan Mela, JBS Haldane Avenue (Park Circus Connector). It is a permanent exhibition complex. Fairs of different types are held at regular intervals, including the Calcutta Book Fair. 
  • 4 Salt Lake Stadium. The stadium has the second largest capacity in the world among those that do not host car races and the largest in the Indian sub-continent. It is currently used for football matches and athletics. The stadium was built in 1984 and holds 120,000 spectators in a three-tier configuration. 


How to get

By bus

Numerous bus lines connect the area with other parts of the city.

By metro

Two new metro lines are under construction: the east-west metro and the New Garia-Airport metro. However, with funding constraints and land acquisition problems, such developments take years, if not decades.

How to get around

The area is extensive and still developing. Cycle rickshaws are available for short trips wherever there is regular demand. Auto-rickshaw services exist but they are not as extensive or frequent as in other parts of the metropolis.

The museum consists of nine sections containing 18 to 19 wax models of eminent personalities. Contains models of Maradona, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Manna Dey, Rabindranath Tagore, Mahatma Gandhi, etc. 
  • 4 Nalban Boating Complex (Adjacent to the Nicco Park), ☎ 91 33 2357 2888. Lake Nalban as the name suggests is mainly made up of lakes and inlets (nal) bordered by groves (ban). It is a nice picnic spot for families, who would like to spend a few hours in the lush greenery and placid lake. It is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Its pristine environment offers a respite and calms the visitors. 
  • 5 Nicco Park, Salt Lake Sector IV, ☎ 91 33 66285549, 91 33 66285509. It is Disneyland for the inhabitants of Calcutta with its various adventures. Opened in 1991, Nicco Park is one of the largest amusement parks in the country and offers innovative entertainment for all ages. This amusement park offers fun for both children and adults and draws crowds from the outskirts of Kolkata especially on weekends. 
  • 6 Science City (At the intersection of J.B.S. Haldane Avenue (Park Circus Connector) and Eastern Metropolitan Bypass). It is one of the most spectacular science centers in the country. Its extension disconcerts the visitor who sees it for the first time. 
  • 7 Swabhumi Heritage Park. Here you can experience local arts and products as well as sample food from its various stalls.
