Gujarat (gujarati: ગુજરાત, hindi: गुजरात) is a state in theWestern India on the Arabian sea.

Geographical notes
Gujarat borders on the north Rajasthan, south with the state of Maharashtra and to the west with the Pakistan. It has a long coastline on the Indian Ocean (about 1600 km). It is the homeland of Mahatma Gandhi.
Background
In January 2001 it was hit by a very violent earthquake that reached 7.9 on the Richter scale, killing more than 100,000 people.
Spoken languages
Gujarati is an Indo-Aryan language related toHindi. As in the rest of theIndia, L'English it is very widespread.

- Kutch a desert extended to the borders with the Pakistan.
- Kathiawar a peninsula of about 60,000 km² between the deep inlets of the Gulf of Kutch and that of Khambat or Cambay. Off the southern tip of the peninsula lies the island of Diu ancient possession Portuguese and today part of the territory of Daman and Diu.
- Thar a desert in the northern part of the state that separates it from Rajastan and from Sind, province of Pakistan.
