Geographical notes

The small village of Canneto is located on a hill at the eastern end of the municipal territory, along the river Elsa, on the border with the town of Molin Nuovo in the municipality of Empoli, and therefore of the metropolitan city of Florence.

Background

Canneto was born in the early Middle Ages and developed as a castle nucleus with a parish church. The town is mentioned for the first time in a document from 780, where it is remembered as the property of the three founders of the San Savino abbey. A church located in Canneto, dedicated to St. George, is remembered since the thirteenth century, when it appeared in the estimate of the churches of the diocese of Lucca of 1260 and later rationes decimarum.

In 1369 the village joined with other centers in the area to rebel against San Miniato, placing itself under Florence. In 1391 the Milanese troops led by Jacopo Dal Verme succeeded for a short time in stealing Canneto from the Florentines.

In the following centuries, Canneto developed as an agricultural locality in the Samminiatese countryside. In 1745, 176 inhabitants were registered in Canneto, then increased to 255 in 1840. In the nineteenth century it was owned by the Bardi counts, who had a large estate here that extended beyond the Elsa, in the territory Empoli.

Following the depopulation of the village after World War II, Canneto ceased to be a fraction of the municipality, being downgraded to a locality. In the last census in which it is recorded, that of 1981, the locality had 49 inhabitants.

How to orient yourself

Canneto still looks like a small village and has the church of San Giorgio Martire in the center. Other buildings for civil use are interesting, such as the farm and the manor house.
