Carmona is a city in the Seville Province and is located 38 km east of Seville.

background

Carmona lies on the lower Rio Guadalquivir on a ridge in the central plain of Andalusia. Carmona was settled in prehistoric times and is one of the oldest settlements in Andalusia. The bell beaker from the Neolithic period found here attests to this. The Carthaginians founded the place and named it Kar-Hammon. The Romans called the city Carmo and left behind some architectural monuments. The Moors took possession of the city in 711 and ruled there for over 500 years. They built the city walls, fountains and palaces. King Ferdinando III of Castile recaptured Carmona from the Moors in 1247. King Peter the Cruel (Pedro el Cruel) enlarged the Alcázar de la Puerta de Marchena and lived there. His sons also preferred the Alcázar. In 1639 Carmona was granted town charter and has always played an important role in the economic and political life of Andalusia throughout history.
