Casale Monferrato is a city of Piedmont.
To know
It is located in the province of Alexandria and it is the second most populated municipality in the province, after the capital.
Geographical notes
The municipality extends over a flat area located at the foot of the hills of Monferrato, a famous wine region of which it is considered the historical capital. The city also stands on a favorable position since it is not far from the capitals of Vercelli, Alessandria, Asti and Novara and within the industrial triangle.
Background
Ever since it became municipium Roman the city was the most important center of the district; after a period of decline caused by the fall of the Western Roman Empire and by the invasions of the barbarian peoples, in fact, it became a free municipality and from the fifteenth to the sixteenth century it was the capital of the Palaeologus. Later it became the domain of the Gonzaga, who built one of the largest and most prestigious European citadels. Contended during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries between the French and the Spanish, during the Risorgimento it was one of the defensive bulwarks against the Austrian Empire.

Typical dishes to be tasted include truffles, agnolotti, mixed fry, la Bagna cauda (anchovy and garlic sauce to accompany vegetables), boiled meat with trio of baths. Among the desserts the famous Krumiri and the bunet.
