Info
The region belonged to the Sultanate of Banjarmasin since the 17th century, until the Dutch colonized and mapped the area in the 19th century. After Indonesian independence, the original inhabitants of the area, the Dayaks, were given their own province, but it was abolished in 1957. In the 1990s there were several serious conflicts between Dayaks and other population groups (mainly Javanese).
