Palangkaraya, also Palangka Raya, is the administrative seat of Kalimantan Tengah, a province in Indonesian part the island Borneo.

background

As a result of the Linggarjati Agreement (1946) as part of the War of Independence, the self-governing country was created here at the turn of 1946/7 Negara Dayak Besar ("Groß-Dayak;" anti-Islamic, Dutch-friendly), which in 1950 became part of the finally independent Indonesia. The dominant Dayak ethnic groups (especially Ngaju), non-Muslims, continued to oppose the official immigration policy in the following decades (transmigrasi) Koran believers, especially Maduresen from the overpopulated regions Javas .

Palangkaraya, then the village of Pahandut (1961: 7000 inhabitants), was founded by the progressive first president of Indonesia, Sukarno, In 1957 chosen to be the site of a new capital city to be built, which should be as close as possible to the geographical center of the island kingdom. However, the geological difficulties of the surrounding alluvial land had been underestimated. The university was founded in 1963. The old settlement on the river with its corrugated iron roofed wooden houses on stilts does not differ from thousands of others even today. The new settlement, a planned town of the European type, is characterized by straight streets and concrete houses.

The expansion ended with the military coup initiated by the CIA in 1965, as a result 1-3 million innocent people massacred were. Development stood still until around 1980. When the overexploitation of Borneo's natural resources was intensified in the 1980s, there was renewed government funding and rapid growth through immigration - the hundred thousand mark was exceeded in 1991 - funded as part of the “Mega Rice Project” that was involved the 1997 drought proved a disaster. In 2017 the capital city plan was warmed up again.

The central point of orientation is the large one 1 Roundabout with the soldier monument, which is certainly stylistically vulnerable. State buildings and authorities can be found here in the west of the city. The business district is in the east, many houses are connected by wooden walkways.

Learn

One can learn how a government dominated by capital interests manages to transform an entire region into an ecological disaster zone through deforestation within twenty years with modern heavy equipment and an economy-friendly policy (“capitalism”). Human and animal livelihoods are in drought (regularly caused by El Niño) endangered by fire and smoke as well as by rain by floods, promoted by the absurdly dug 4600 km of drainage. The "reforestation" desired by corporations for palm oil production - a substantial part of the production serves as a supplement to EU biofuel - by means of monocultures should also be no less harmful.

health

2  Hospital Dr. Doris Sylvanus, Jalan Tambun Bungai No.4,. Tel.: 62 536 3221717. Open: 24-hour emergency room.

The river water can be contaminated with heavy metals through illegal gold mining in the upper reaches.
