  • 5 Samarinda - Capital of the province ofEast, Samarinda it is washed by the Mahakam River and is a river port where tourists embark to reach the remote villages of Long Pahangai and Nahabuan. From the latter village, tourists with a sense of adventure (and in excellent physical condition) go to the even more remote Betung Kerihun National Park, on the border line with the province Malaysian of Sarawak.
  • 6 Singkawang - Inhabited mainly by Chinese who flocked here at the time of the boom in the coal mining industry, Singkawang is located on the west coast, 145 km north of Pontianak. • 2 Loksado - Extended municipality in the Meratus Mountains which includes traditional Dayak indigenous villages.
  • 3 Meratus Mountains (Pegunungan Meratus) - Widely deforested, the Meratus Mountains were once dotted with countless villages of the semi-nomadic Meratus Dayak tribe. In 1990, 350 orangutangs were introduced there.
  • Nagara - Small village.
  • 4 Betung Kerihun National Park (Taman Nasional Betung Kerihun) - A seemingly remote park located right on the border line with the province Malaysian of the Sarawak. Until the end of the 20th century it was only possible to reach it by boat by going up the river Kapuas from the city of Pontoniac to that of Putussibau. The opening of comfortable paved roads has compromised the integrity of its forest cover, favoring the illegal trade in timber and poachers always looking for baby orangutans which are then sold abroad as pets.
  • 5 Gunung Palung National Park (Taman Nasional Gunung Palung) - Protected area with a rich fauna, although devastated by fires and the felling of tall trees.
  • 6 Kayan Mentarang National Park (Taman Nasional Kayan Mentarang) - Mountain park on the border with Malaysia, now easily accessible from Bandar Seri Begawan. Very large (13,605 km²) and entirely covered by a dense jungle, the park is home to a diverse fauna. In the waters of the Kayan River it is easy to spot rhinos.
  • 7 Sabangau National Park (Taman Nasional Sebangau) - Spread over a stretch of swampy plain in the central province, the park was established in 1995 after losing 85% of the forests that covered it. Since that date, attempts have been made to reintegrate the original forest mantle and today the park is home to a large number of orangutangs (about 6,500 specimens).
  • 8 Tanjung Puting National Park (Taman Nasional Tanjung Puting) - Renowned ecotourism destination, Tanjung Puting Park is the ideal place to observe orangutangs.
