To know
How to orient yourself
The modern center extends north of the historic one until it reaches the famous seaside resort of Mondello, squeezed between the northern offshoots of Monte Pellegrino and the eastern ones of Monte Gallo, set up as a nature reserve (Capo Gallo Nature Reserve). The area extends to the slopes of Monte Pellegrino which separates it from the open sea. Its main artery is the Via Ruggero VII which starts from the piazza Giuseppe Verdi mentioned above and constitutes the north extension of via Maqueda. At Piazza Castelnuovo it changes its name to way of Liberty.
Until the end of the 18th century the area was open countryside with dense citrus groves. Today it appears densely urbanized but boasts a very large park, that of the Favorita, arranged in 1799 at the behest of Ferdinand III of Bourbon forced to repair in Palermo from Naples under the pressure of French troops.

- 1 Politeama Theater, Piazza Ruggero Settimo, 15. In 1865 the Municipality of Palermo approved the construction of the Politeama. The internal competition is won by Giuseppe Damiani Almeyda and the first project drawings are presented in mid-1866 and excavation works are already underway in January 1867. The theater was designed as an open-air day theater, but it was later decided to build a cover. On 7 June 1874 it was inaugurated even if incomplete and still without coverage. The roof, considered for the time a work of great engineering, was made of metal by the Oretea Foundry in November 1877. The last embellishment works were carried out in 1891 on the occasion of the great National Exhibition which was held that year in Palermo. . The value of this construction lies in the exaltation of the social function of the theater as a "people's theater" with the enormous horseshoe-shaped hall (which in 1874 could hold five thousand spectators) with two rows of boxes, dominated by a large gallery articulated in two orders. The entrance consists of a triumphal arch surmounted by the bronze quadriga of Apollo, the work of Mario Rutelli, flanked by a pair of bronze horses of Benedetto Civiletti.
