Chaumont (Haute-Marne) (until 1971 Chaumont-en-Bassigny) is a city in French Department Haute-Marne in the region Grand Est (historical region: Champagne-Ardenne). It is the seat of the prefecture of the department.
background
Chaumont is located on the Langres plateau in the historic landscape Bassigny above the Marne valley, to which the Canal entre Champagne et Bourgogne (formerly known as the Marne-Saône Canal) runs parallel. The city goes back to a Carolingian residence. The Grand Indulgence (le Grand Pardon) has been celebrated since 1475 and attracts tens of thousands of visitors. In 1617 a Jesuit college was established. The connection to the railway network led to an economic boom in the middle of the 19th century. Numerous houses were destroyed in two air raids in May 1944. In 1951 an air force base was established. There has been a relative economic decline since the 1970s.
