Vesoul is a city in French Department Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. It is the seat of the prefecture of this department in the former region Franche-Comté (Free County).

background

The city in the basin of the Durgeon, a tributary of the Saône, was built in the 13th century at the foot of a castle on the site of a prehistoric settlement and later a Roman legionary camp (Castrum Vesulium). The castle was razed in 1595. Until the French Revolution, Vesoul was the capital of the Bailiwick of Armont, which came to France in 1678. After 1850 Vesoul developed into an important railway junction. Operates at Vesoul Peugeot Citroën a bigger factory. The name of the city is in a chanson of Jacques Brel perpetuated.
