Belfort is a city in the eastern French region Franche-Comté and administrative seat of the department Territoire de Belfort.
background
It is the capital of the Territoire de Belfort and the Arrondissement Belfort, as well as the administrative seat of five cantons. The "Territoire" is a relic from the German Empire. The Germans gave freedom to the originally Alsatian city because the residents and soldiers had so valiantly defended themselves. Perhaps the French language, which is always predominant here, also played a role.
It is located at a 30-kilometer-wide narrow point between the Vosges and the law and thus at a strategically important point. This place is also called the Burgundian Gate (Trouée de Belfort). It is one of the easiest connecting routes to walk between the Rhine and the Rhone.
