Territoire de Belfort department

Belfort is a department in the French region Franche-Comté. Belfort belonged once to the Alsace. After the German annexation in 1871, the German Empire renounced the French-speaking city (the rest of Alsace was German-speaking) and returned it to France. Since then, Belfort has been independent as a small "Territoire de Belfort" with serial number 90.

It borders the to the south SwissCanton of Jura and from there clockwise to the southwest to the department Doubs, in the west Haute-Saône, in the north for a few kilometers to the department Vosges and in the east Haut-Rhin.

  • L'épaule du Ballon, Balloon shoulder, is native to the Belfort area. It consists of a boneless lamb shoulder filled with blueberries and cooked in the oven. The festive dish can be found on the menus of restaurants in Belfortain, where it is valued for its originality and sweet and sour taste. Traditionally served from September to May, it goes well with a good glass of red wine.
