Saint-Dié-des-Vosges - mostly only Saint-Dié called - is a town on the Meurthe River in the Vosges. It belongs to the department Vosges and to the travel region Lorraine.

Saint-Dié-des-Vosges is a bishopric and has a population of around 20,000. The city used to be in German Saint Didel or Saint Diedolt called. The area around Saint-Dié is called Pays de la Déodatie. Martin Waldseemüller's map of the world was made in Saint-Dié in 1507 (Universalis Cosmographia) published the first map series to use the designation America used. The only surviving copy is now in the Library of Congress at Washington, D.C.

The city was badly damaged in 1944 and rebuilt in a modern way. The only thing left of the old buildings is the rebuilt cathedral and its immediate surroundings.

getting there

By plane

The closest airport is Strasbourg (SXB; 85 km away). From the Entzheim airport train station, a train leaves once a day (10.03 a.m.) directly to Saint-Dié (travel time 1:45), otherwise you have to change trains in Strasbourg and Sélestat and take a total of 2 hours.

By train

The 1 Saint-Dié-des-Vosges train station departs approximately once an hour from regional express trains (TER) Nancy Served via Lunéville, the journey takes just over an hour. In Nancy there is a connection to the TGV to / from Paris. A TER leaves five times a day Epinal to Saint-Dié, also an hour's drive.

From direction Strasbourg A TER only runs once a day to Saint-Dié (departure from Strasbourg at 9.55 a.m., arrival at Saint-Dié at 11.49 a.m. The nearest more important train station on the Alsatian side is 45 km away Sélestat (Schlettstadt) on the Strasbourg–ColmarMulhouseBasel. There you can change to the bus to Saint-Dié every two hours. From Strasbourg it takes a total of 1:45 hours by bus and train, from Colmar 1½ hours, from Basel SBB 2:10 hours.

Coming from Germany, the journey by train is cumbersome and lengthy: From Freiburg (Breisgau), which is only 100 km away, you have to change at least twice and take at least 2:45 hours, from Saarbrücken 150 km away even more than 3½ hours.

By bus

On weekdays the 30428 bus leaves the train station every two hours Sélestat to Saint-Dié, driving time 70 minutes.

In the street

Saint-Dié-des-Vosges is on the motorway-like route nationale N 59. This leads from Sélestat / Strasbourg in one direction and Lunéville / Nancy in the other direction. From the prefecture town of Épinal you can get to Saint-Dié via the D420 departmental road (50 km / 55 minutes). From Nancy it is approx. 85 km (driving time about an hour); 90 km from Strasbourg (just under 1½ hours). From Freiburg i. Br. One drives about 100 km (approx. 1:45 hours) via Riegel and Sélestat; from Basel via the A35 and Colmar 130 km (also 1:45 hours); from Saarbrücken via Sarreguemines, the French A4, Sarrebourg and Baccarat 150 km (around 2 hours); from Karlsruhe via the A5, past Offenburg, Strasbourg and Sélestat 170 km (just under 2½ hours).
