Closures

Closures is a village of the Tuscany.

To know

Chiusure is a small village halfway between the cities of Buonconvento is Asciano, on a road that winds through the Crete Senesi in province of Siena. The area around Chiusure is full of majestic cypress trees and probably has one of the most beautiful views in all of Tuscany.

When to go

As of February 2020, the main reasons many visitors go to Chiusure are to see the beautiful views and visit the abbey.

Background

The hamlet of Chiusure developed around the ancient church, Sant'Angelo in Luco, which already existed in the eighth century. Bernardo Tolomei founded the Benedictine Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore in 1319 and Antonio di Meo Tolomei, a member of a noble family who owned property in the surrounding area, acquired the village of Chiusure in 1333 and donated the land and houses to the villagers .

How to get

Glimpse of Closures

By car

The best access is by car and when you reach the city there is parking available on the roads around the city as well as at the abbey. Closures is located 30 minutes south of Siena by car on the via Cassia (SR2) for Buonconvento, a very nice village, or via Asciano on the SP438. In both cases, you will take the SP431 for the rest of the route until you see a sign for a crossroads for Chiusure via the Provincial Road of Pecorile (SP60). Chiusure is located between Buonconvento and Asciano - 6 km from Asciano and 8 km from Buonconvento.

On the train

A local train called "Asciano - M. Oliveto M." (Asciano - Monte Oliveto Maggiore) goes up to the Asciano stop; another train goes to Buonconvento. Then you can take a taxi (Cassioli, 0577 71 82 73 in Asciano; Lorenzetti, 0577 80 60 94 or Tistoni, 333 3584410 in Buonconvento).

By bus

SITA connects a bus of Line 109 / A every day from Siena, departing from Porta Ovile at 13:58 (winter) or 14:12 (summer) and Porta Pispini at 14:01 (winter) or 14:14 (summer) and arriving at 14: 50/15: 05. However, the only bus that returns to Siena from Chiusure leaves at 06:55 (regardless of the season) and arrives at Porta Pispini at 07:44, thus making it necessary to stay one night in Chiusure or in the immediate vicinity.

On foot

If you are planning to hike through the Crete Senesi, plan carefully. The region is a semi-desert with no shade. Make sure you take plenty of water, especially in hot weather, and use plenty of sunscreen.
