The city of Naxos can be explored on foot. To the beaches outside there are regular buses from the bus station at the port, tickets are available from the machines. Just ask about other stops at the hotel.
Cars are not recommended for tourists in the city center, there is hardly any parking in the narrow streets. Quads or mopeds are well-suited for trips into the vicinity of the city, but cars are preferable for trips to the Tragea or the east coast.

Portara
The temple gate of an ancient temple of Apollo, called Portara, is approx. 4 m wide, 6 m high and actually consists only of the two door reveals and a lintel. The white houses of the old town are towered over by mighty gray walls. They belong to an almost completely preserved Venetian castle, which was probably built in the 13th century over an older Byzantine complex. This Castello Veneziano is accessible through two gates. At the north gate Trani Porta is the Byzantine Museum. The south gate is at the Platia Pradouna. Inside the Kastro is the Catholic cathedral, until a few years ago it was the bishopric.

Waterfront
The harbor bay stretches from the town hall to the Palatia peninsula. The southern part is characterized by banks and authorities, from about the middle the promenade stretches as a wide strip of cafes and restaurants up to the bus station. In addition to the harbor basin for the fast ferries, there is a small island in the marina with the little church on it Panagia Myrtidiotissa and the remains of a temple of Poseidon. The old town with the district of Bourgos extends between the waterfront and the Kastro. Probably the most interesting street is signposted "Old Market", a tangle of corners, market stalls and shops.

Beaches near the city
