background

In the Middle Persian language, Khorasan literally means "where the sun rises" - a fitting name, since in this region on the northeastern tip of Iran the sun can be seen earliest in the country every day. In addition to the unmistakable holy city of Mashhad, you will find ancient buildings and artifacts from various realms that have ruled the region throughout history and mixed with a variety of ethnic groups (Turkmen, Afghans / Pashtuns, Baluch and Arabs depending on where you are ).

Whether you're on an overland tour of the world from west to east or following in Marco Polo's footsteps along the Silk Road, Khorasan is a great gateway to Central Asia. In addition to the transport links to western Afghanistan and Turkmenistan in the region and to the consulates of Central Asian countries conveniently located in Mashhad, you will feel at home in the traditional yurts of nomadic Turkmen on the land of the Khorasani (especially on the northern foothills) at the gateway to something other than the Persian heartland known today.
