Sahelian Chad it is the vast region Chad lying between the Sahara Desert to the north and the fertile savannah to the south, it is mainly populated by nomadic groups.
To know
The semi-arid zone of Sahelian Chad forms a belt of about 500 kilometers in width that runs from the prefectures of Lac and Chari-Baguirmi eastwards through Guéra, Ouaddaï and the prefectures in northern Salamat to the Sudanese border.
In the north of the region, thorny shrubs and acacias grow wild, while date palms, cereals and horticultural crops are raised in scattered oases. Outside of these settlements, nomads tend to gather their flocks during the rainy season, moving south as fodder and water disappear from the surface as the dry season begins. The center is characterized by drought resistant grasses and small woodlands.
Agriculture is also common in the marshy regions east of Lake Chad and near swamps or wells. Many farmers in the region combine subsistence farming with raising cattle, sheep, goats and poultry.
When to go
The climate, in this transition zone between the northern desert area of the Saharan Chad and the southern one of Sudanese Chad, is characterized by a rainy season (from June to early September) and a dry period (from October to May).
During the hot season, in April and May, maximum temperatures often rise above 40 ° C. In the southern part, rainfall is sufficient to allow the production of crops on the ground without irrigation, to grow millet and sorghum.
