Cintoia

Cintoia is a fraction of the municipality of Greve in Chianti in the province of Florence.

To know

The toponym Cintoia may be of Roman derivation if it refers to an area of land of a "century", that is 200 iugeri (one iugero was equal to 240x120 Roman feet = 2,520 m², therefore a century corresponded to about 50 hectares), but it is more probably attributable to the Lombard term of "centena", a rural administrative division of the early medieval period.

Background

Between the end of the 10th century and the beginning of the 11th century there is news of Cintoia, but to know its organization we must refer to the second half of the 13th century. Lists of Rationes decimarum (1274-1303) and the lists of the "peoples" who supplied the Florentine army providing aid to Montalcino in 1260, in the Book of Montaperti they serve the purpose. From the Montaperti book in fact there is news of the Populus Sancte Marie in Cintoia (the castle of Cintoia). In a document of 1073 gods are mentioned Boni homines of Cintoia who take an oath for their community. In 1153 mention is made of a burgo de castro de Cintorio.

The castle of Cintoia today is almost entirely destroyed, the town that surrounds it is made up of buildings with archivolts and architraves in doors and windows and masonry in filaretto; the houses have been renovated. In a stone draft of the surviving wall structures of the castle of Cintoia, there is a carved cross of the Jerusalemite type, a sign of the existence of a shelter for wayfarers.

In the early years of the fourteenth century, when the Republic Florentine established the "Leagues" to organize the countryside, the "Liga Cintoie et Vallis Robiane" was born. This League was made up of the plebate of Cintoia, that of San Miniato in Robbiana and some peoples of the plebate ofImpruneta. It is mentioned in the Statutes of the Capitano del Popolo (1322-1325).

The Lega di Cintoia had its own jurisdictional and administrative statute and had its own councils and offices. It was then united with the Lega di Val di Greve, together with which it formed the Podesteria of Val di Greve, ancestor of the Municipality.

Facade of the Pieve di San Pietro
  • 1 Parish church of San Pietro. The church retains the original Romanesque structure, with the exception of the initial part modified following a collapse. Despite its considerable size, it has a single wide nave layout ending in a semicircular apse and covered with exposed trusses.
Originally it was more developed in length as the ancient Romanesque facade was aligned with the bell tower, located on the right side and of which today the remains of the basement remain. The area of the tribune was also modified and these interventions are clearly legible in the upper part of the apse where the wall facing in the Alberese row that characterizes the rest of the building is totally missing.
The interior was completely transformed in the 18th century in Baroque style, erasing all traces of the primitive Romanesque construction. At the beginning of the presbytery there is a triumphal arch.
To this church belonged a monolithic immersion baptismal font in pietra serena of the 12th century with an octagonal shape which, stolen in the sixties, was later recovered and destined for the Parish of San Pancrazio Castelnuovo dei Sabbioni, near Cavriglia.
The church of San Pietro a Cintoia also housed a Della Robbia altarpiece, Eucharistic Tabernacle between Saints Peter and Paul work of Santi Buglioni. This altarpiece was then transferred to the church of La Panca: it presents in the predella the Altoviti coats of arms, which had the patronage of this church - in fact the Altoviti arms also appears, with the date 1688, on all the serene stone altars of this church - while popular tradition wanted it to come from the suppressed church of Santa Margherita in Sugame. Saints Peter and Paul are represented in adoration of the Eucharist kept in the ciborium, which has an eye in the center to contain the Host and an opening at the bottom for the Blessed Sacrament. On the altarpiece is represented Christ in piety, The delivery of the keys to St. Peter and the Conversion of St. Paul on the road to Damascus. The frame has candelabra decorations on the sides, the architrave is decorated, the two capitals have cherub heads with cornucopias. Facade of the Church of Santa Maria
  • 2 Church of Santa Maria. It was inserted inside the castle of Cintoia and mention is made of it since 1260. The patronage of this church was of the Vernaccia family who contributed to its construction. In the eighteenth century the church was abandoned and the parish of Cintoia became the Church of San Pietro a Cintoia.
A painting belongs to the church of Santa Maria a Cintoia, The Madonna and Child, which is probably a piece of a polyptych, attributed to the Master of San Niccolò, a painter of Orcagna extraction of the mid-fourteenth century. In this painting the Virgin is at the center of six saints - Saint Catherine, Saint Mary Magdalene, Saint Francis, Saint John the Baptist, Saint Benedict and a holy Bishop. Clients are also represented, in a reduced format. At the center of the painting there is a church, probably Santa Maria a Cintoia, at the bottom you can see a castle, perhaps the castle of Cintoia and at the top the Church of San Pietro. This painting is now deposited in the Episcopal Seminary of Fiesole.
In the church of Santa Maria a Cintoia there is also a table representing the Virgin and Child, seated on the throne between Saints Bartolomeo and Francesco, with their own iconographic symbols. St. Bartholomew holds the knife in his hand, (in memory of his martyrdom), St. Francis with the book and the Cross, shows the Stigmata on his chest. The steps create a perspective space. This table, first considered work of a secondary Florentine artist of the early 16th century who was inspired by the works of Ghirlandaio and Fra Bartolomeo, was connected to the youth activity of Granacci by Federico Zeri in 1963.
