The Barrio Histórico (historic district) of Colonia del Sacramento has been defined as one of the World Heritage Sites in Uruguay. It is a popular tourist attraction for visitors arriving from Buenos Aires, and is served by ferries that ply the Río de la Plata between the two cities, with hydrofoils that allow the transfer in 50 minutes. The historic part of Cologne, which has cobbled streets built by the Portuguese in the 17th century, can be reached on foot from the pier. The main destinations are:
- Portón de Campo. City gate and wooden drawbridge.
- Lighthouse and ruins of the seventeenth-century convent of San Francisco.
- Basilica of the Sanctísimo Sacramento. Built in stone by the beautiful Portuguese 1808.
- Portuguese Museum. Built in the 18th century, it displays Portuguese furnishings, jewelery, uniforms and old Portuguese naval expedition maps.
- Casa de Nacarello. Portuguese house from the 18th century.
- Municipal Museum. Rebuilt by the Spaniards in 1835 under the name of Casa del Almirante Brown, exhibits artifacts and documents from different city eras and cultures.
- Viceroy's house (House of the Virrey). Rebuilt over the ruins of the original.
- Iglesia Matriz. The oldest Uruguayan church, dating from 1695-99.
