Compiegne is a city in France. It is in the department Oise in the former region Picardythat 2016 in the region Hauts-de-France rose. The city lies directly at the confluence of the Aisne River into the Oise.
background
The city has its origins in a Merovingian castle called Compendium. Various kings of the Merovingians and later the Carolingians had the castle and the city expanded. The Carolingian kings Ludwig II and Louis V are buried in the church of Saint-Corneille. In May 1430 the Maid of Orléans was captured by the Burgundians during the siege of Compiègne and handed over to the English. Between 1751 and 1788 the Compiègne Castle was built for King Louis XV. built. Together with the palaces of Versailles and Fontainebleau, it is one of the three most important royal and imperial residences in France. The city was the scene of the armistice agreements between France and Germany in both world wars. A railway wagon was set up in the Compiègne forest and on November 11, 1918 the Compiègne armistice between England, France and the German Reich ended the First World War. On June 22, 1940, an armistice between the German Reich and France was signed again in Compiègne. This ended the German campaign in the west and led to the occupation of much of France by German troops.

Compiègne can be reached from Paris-Nord station with the Train Express Régional (TER). There are no direct connections from D, A and CH.
By bus
In the street
The city is reached from Paris via the A 1 autoroute (European routes 15 and 19). From exit 10n it is a good 10 km to the center on the RN 31, from exit 11, which is cheaper for those coming from the north, around 15 km. From the A 4 autoroute it is shorter, at Reims to switch to the toll-free route nationale 31 (Europastraße 46) and get to the city Soissons to drive past.
