Ceske Budejovice (NS. České Budějovice) - a statutory city in the south Czechia, in the Českobudějovice Basin, at the confluence of the Vltava and Malša rivers.

Characteristic

This South Bohemian metropolis was founded in 1265 by the Czech king Premysl Otakar II at the confluence of the Vltava and Malse. Premyslav Otakar II Square is 133 meters by 137 meters and is one of the largest squares in the Czech Republic. It has arcades and a number of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque houses. Other important sights of the city include the town hall, the Samson Fountain and the 72-meter-high Black Tower, which offers a beautiful view of the city and the surrounding area.

The city is a great place to visit if you want to get away from the large numbers of tourists in Prague or in the nearby Český Krumlov. Well-developed transport connections make it an ideal starting point for exploring the area. There are many historic towns and villages nearby, numerous hiking routes and an extensive network of cycle paths. The most famous cycle path is No. 12 connecting České Budějovice and Hluboka nad Vltavou.

By bus

Buses frequently depart from Prague's "Na Knížecí" and "Roztyly" bus stations to the main bus station. The journey takes approximately 2.5-3 hours. There is also a Yellow Bus line offered by the Student Agency which takes 2 hours and 20 minutes for a similar price. The bus stop in České Budějovice is located in the "Mercury Centrum", a two-story shopping mall with a rooftop bus station, not far from the city center. By train

From Prague, the train is probably better than the bus as it is often more comfortable, cheaper, faster and goes from the center to the center. Trains from Prague to České Budějovice run every hour. The journey from Prague takes 2-2.5 hours. The standard fare for a ticket sold at the ticket office is 222 CZK for one person (133 CZK for the second person, 111 CZK for the next), but is often much cheaper when buying in advance or online. There are two types of trains - rychlík (R) and express (Ex), the latter being faster and more convenient (both are the same price). Other possible destinations that can be reached by direct train are Český Krumlov, Jindřichův Hradec, Tábor, Brno, Třebíč, Pilzno and Linz in Austria (connections to Salzburg, Vienna and other cities in Austria). By car

The road from Prague is not very good, half is a new motorway, but the other half is a heavily congested two-lane road. Avoid traveling this road on Friday and Sunday evenings. You have to pay for parking in the wider city center, with the amount separating the city from the parking lot. There are parking machines on the street - you must provide your registration number when buying a parking ticket.

The historic city center is completely walkable, but you can also visit more remote parts of the city, though it will likely take longer.

By bike

The city is cyclist-friendly with many bike paths. You can rent a bike at the train station or at some hotel if you want to have one in the long run, but if you only want to ride around the city it's probably better to use the app Rekola. The best maps for cycling are maps.cz in outdoor mode.

Public transport

There is an extensive network of public buses and trolley buses that run frequently during the day. The ticket costs CZK 16 and is valid for one hour - there are ticket machines at the stops. Typical traffic jams and parking zones make it not very useful to move around the city.

Worth seeing

  • Przemysław Otokar II Square (Czech: Naměstí of Přemysl Otakar II). A huge square in the middle of the city. Historical monuments include St. Nicholas, the Black Tower, the Samson Fountain and the characteristic yellow Vcela Palace.

    • In the middle of the square is one of the city's symbols, the Baroque Samson Fountain. It was created in 1721-1726 by Zachariáš Horn, and the statues were made by Josef Dietrich. At the top is a statue of the biblical hero Samson.
    • The cornerstone is near the Samson Fountain, marked with a cross. It used to have an execution scaffold, and legend has it that anyone who crosses it after 10 p.m. will not find a way home and will wander the city until morning.
  • Town hall. The building with three towers was built in the Renaissance style in 1555. Today it is an elegant baroque building from 1727-1730 built by A.E. Martinelli. They are decorated with Dietrich's Allegories: Justice, Courage, Wisdom and Caution, as well as symbols of the city and the Czech Republic.
  • Nicholas Cathedral. Built as a Gothic building in the 13th century. However, it burned down in the 17th century, and today's appearance is baroque. There are three statues on the pediment - St. Wenceslas, St. Nicholas and St. Auratiana, the interior of the church is very simple. The most important part is the main altar from the 18th century.
  • Next to the cathedral is the dominant feature of České Budějovice, Black Tower. The 72-meter-high Renaissance tower was completed in 1577, and six bells were placed in the tower, the largest of which is called Bumerin. Season April 1 - October 31.
  • Remains of fortifications (on the slope of the Malše River). The Iron Maiden and the Rabenstein Tower, fragments of the old fortifications and the last remaining part of the medieval fortifications in Budejovice. The Iron Maiden dates back to the 14th century. The name comes from the torture instrument inside.

  • South Bohemian Museum from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. It has a rich collection related to the history and nature of South Bohemia. Natural history collections from ancient South Bohemia, medieval history and art from the 17th and 18th centuries.
  • Alš South-Bohemian Gallery belongs to the five largest institutions of this type in the Czech Republic. Permanent exhibition of South Bohemian Gothic paintings on wood and sculptures from the 13th-16th centuries. Flemish and Dutch paintings from the 17th century. Part of the exhibition is located in the Wortner House in České Budějovice at ul. U Černé věže 22.
  • Ohrada Zoo is located near the village of Hluboká nad Vltavou and České Budějovice, which is the capital of the region, at a distance of 8 km. The zoo is easily accessible by train, bus or car and is open every day all year round.

Drinking

Throw away a pitcher of Budweiser beer, because it's his hometown. See also Pivovar Budějovický Budvar, above. The best solution is to visit one of the pubs operated by the brewery, as there you can find the widest selection of beers, including specialties. Masné krámy and Malý Pivovar are located in the old town center, near the main square. Choose one without a doubt, the other Budvarka Pub choice is located in the brewery complex further north from the city center.

  • Café la Storia, Panská 26 - A cafe in one of the oldest buildings in the city, near the city walls. On a hot summer day, don't sit outside, but try to find your chair in a small yard between buildings where you can avoid the sun and where the temperature is always comfortable. Take one of the Lavazza coffee magazines to learn something new.
  • Café Ionia, Plachého 16 - A small place with a bar, two tables outside in summer and a smaller brand of coffee that gives the place its name.

Where next

Ceske Budejovice is a nice place to stay: its good connections to the surrounding region make it a great place to discover South Bohemia. Buses and trains run on time, are cheap and relatively easy to understand. The bus station is on the roof of Mercury Centrum, and tickets can be purchased on the bus. Train tickets can be purchased prior to boarding.

  • Český Krumlov, a monument inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and an extremely popular tourist destination. Buses to Český Krumlov leave every half hour from the main bus station at Mercury Centrum and take about 45 minutes (32 Kč). The train is usually slower (55 minutes) and more expensive (49 CZK, although you get a discount from the second passenger).
  • Hluboka nad Vltavou, a nearby village with a large "Windsor" style castle on a hill and an old church. Follow bike path 12 along the Vltava River north of the city (approximately 10 km) until you reach Hluboka.
  • Holašovice is a small village inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as the best preserved traditional Central European village. Its square is lined with unique houses decorated in the style of "folk baroque". There is also a small pond and a chapel. There are pubs in two buildings as well as a tourist information office.
  • Kleť. It is the highest point in the nearby region and offers relaxing forest walks, cycling and 360 ° panoramic views of South Bohemia from above. There is also an observatory at the top. To get there by train from the main station to the village of Holubov, from where you can see the mountains. The train comes from the main station and you need to be in the final car to get off at Holubov. On the way back, visiting the ruins of the gothic castle of Divci Kamen is a few kilometers of a short trip in the area under the mountain.
  • Tel, a small but extremely charming city inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Approximately 2 hours and 105 Kč by local bus.
  • Trzeboń - a picturesque town with a castle, Regent brewery, fish lakes and a charming market square. There are also various walking and cycling paths. The bus journey from Mercury Centrum takes approximately 45 minutes through beautiful scenery.
