What see

When visiting any of these Denpasar temples, remember to always bring one sarong it's a sash with him. Few tourists usually visit these temples, so it will be unlikely to be able to hire suitable clothing to enter the temple.

  • Alun-Alun Puputan (Puputan Square), Jl Gajah Mada / Jl Suprati. The huge statue of Catur Mukha with 4 faces and 8 arms is located in the square in the center of the city. The statue represents Brahma and has the function of guardian of the four cardinal points. The square is a key point for orientation in the city. If you get lost, try to come back here, then everything will be clearer.
  • Bali Museum (Museum Negeri Propinsi Bali), Jl Mayor Wisnu (Eastern part of and Alun-Alun Puputan), 62 361 222680. Ecb copyright.svgRp 3,000. Simple icon time.svgSat-Thu 8: 00-15: 30, Fri 8: 00-11: 00. A little touristy museum that offers a good introduction to all of Bali's major sights, both historical and modern. Originally opened in 1910, the building collapsed in 1917 following an earthquake. In 1932 thanks to the German artist Walter Spies it began to resume its function. The gardens and the building are quite charming. The museum is divided into four separate pavilions. The main one has a large collection of bronze and wood artifacts and very ancient stones. The southern pavilion houses many textiles, the northernmost one focuses on Performance art of Bali. The central one is finally dedicated to Hinduism and the traditional rites of the island.
Pure Maospahit
  • Lapangan Puputan Margarana (Puputan Park), Jl Raya Puputan. This rather impressive park is home to the huge Bajra Sandhi monument (literally the suffering of the people of Bali). The gray stone monument design symbolizes Indonesian independence date, August 17th, 1945. There are 8 entrances, 17 corners and the height is exactly 45 meters. The monument is the most significant for its commemoration of the various puputans (suicide fights to the death) of the Balinese against the Dutch at the beginning of the 20th century. In the northern part of the park is the governor's office and other government buildings.
  • Palace of Satria and the Royal Temples, Jl Veteren (About 300 meters north of Alun-Alun Puputan). Ecb copyright.svgFree donation. Simple icon time.svg8:00-16:00. The palace and temple of the royal family of Denpasar which is beautifully maintained and admirable. Open to all Denpasar residents for worship. There are also some gorgeous ornamental carvings, even by the standards of Bali.
  • Pure Agung Jagatnata (Jagatnata Temple) (Adjacent to the northern side of the Bali museum). A state temple which built in 1953. Dedicated to the supreme Sanghyang Widi Wasa, this temple is open to all worshipers without any limitations as it is a government building and not a village temple. There are great ceremonies here twice a month during the full moon and "dark moon". Ask the tourist office for a detailed program.
Taman Budaya Cultural Center
  • Pure Maospahit (Maospahit Temple), Jl Sutomo. An ancient temple with a long and glorious history probably dating back to the 14th century. This is a typical peak temple of the Majapahit period being built largely from red brick. Unfortunately, much of it was destroyed in the early 20th century earthquake, but there are some original remains, including the guardian statues in the inner courtyard. It is a fascinating temple and one that is rarely visited by tourists.
  • Sidik Jari Museum, Jl Hayam Wuruk 175, 62 361 23511. Simple icon time.svg9:00-17:00. A small private art museum founded and owned by I Gusti Ngurah Gede Pemecutan and which displays his own works as well as those of other artists. It also has facilities for public dancing and other performances.
  • Taman Wedhi Budaya Cultural Center, Jl Nusa Indah,. Ecb copyright.svgRp 3,000. Simple icon time.svg8:00-15:30. A museum covering the history and essence of Bali art. The classical schools are well represented by both painters and sculptors and there is a large section relating to contemporary Bali art. The Gamelan orchestra also performs here.
