Diani Beach is an approximately 30 km long, white sand beach of the Indian Ocean on the south coast of Kenya. The beach and the town of the same name are about 35 kilometers south of the port city Mombasa. Diani Beach is the tourist center on the south coast with wonderful beaches and not far from well-known safari parks.

Diani Beach

Those who spend their vacation on the beautiful beaches of Kenya and would like to go on a safari tour, you have to decide whether to go to the South coast or North coast wants to drive, which only means to the beaches south or north of Mombasa. While the south coast has the more beautiful beaches and the more pristine nature, the north coast offers around Mombasa and Mtwapa much more tourist activities and attractions.

The Diani Beach, 30 km south of Mombasa, is the best-known and most beautiful beach on the south coast and is particularly popular with German holidaymakers. The Tiwi Beach to the north of Diani Beach is just by the Congo River Cut. 10 km south of Diani Beach is the Galu Beach, 20 km south of the Gazi Beach, 30 km south of the Msambweni Beach and 50 km south of the Mwazaro Beach. The latter two are hardly developed for tourism and are very original. Knowledge of English is an advantage, but you can also go on holiday at Diani Beach with little vocabulary, as German is widespread. Especially in the winter months from mid-November to February, many tourists come from Northern Europe, especially many from Germany. Many retirees also spend the winter here. "What you spend on heating in the north is enough for rent and flights here," they say.

climate

Klima in Diani beach

The climate at Diani Beach is tropical, humid and warm. The best travel time is of End of November to mid-March. Then it gets uncomfortably hot with increased humidity. The worst travel time is in the main rainy season of April to June. Then there is often little to do, because the lack of sewerage means that the paths and streets are flooded and muddy in a very short time. Most of the time it only rains briefly and then the sun shines again, but days of continuous rain also occur. In the resulting puddles, the mosquitoes multiply suddenly and the risk of malaria and dengue fever increases. Even in the 2nd rainy season, October November one must reckon with impairments. There are almost no museums or other sights that you can visit even when it rains, at most a few temples and shopping centers in Mombasa. So it can get boring on rainy days.

getting there

Package or individual

If you are coming to Kenya for the first time, it is better to book a package tour. Then you don't have to worry about anything and you can get to know the country and its peculiarities in peace. If you liked it and you want to come back, then it is cheaper to book your individual flight and hotel or holiday apartment.

By plane

  • There is a small airport in Ukunda, international travelers usually fly into the airport Mombasa to or come via Nairobi and then by flight or train / bus to Mombasa. Jambojet and Silver Stone Airlines offer direct cheap flights between Ukunda and Nairobi on and Sax AirlinesMombasa-Ukunda.
  • Direct flight: From the airport, guests who have booked package tours are usually picked up from the hotels by minibus. It takes about 2 hours from landing in Mombasa to arriving at the hotel. If you arrive privately, you can take one of the taxis, which costs about 5000 Ksh. If the hotel does not offer transport to the south coast, it is often possible to join other hotel buses waiting in front of the airport to speak to the driver and tip.
  • Arrival via Nairobi: In Nairobi you have to be on the outbound flight always collect your luggage (even if you have booked the connecting flight to Mombasa on the same ticket). Nairobi is then the entry airport. So you have to go through customs and passport control and have the visa issued if you don't have an eVisa. This also applies if you have booked the onward flight together with the flight to Mombasa. You change to national flights in Nairobi and there are no more baggage checks in Mombasa. Then you leave the building and go to the Domestic Airport Terminal opposite and checked in again. The terminals are arranged in a semicircle, so you can either walk across the parking lot or walk around on the footpath. The latter has the advantage that you can pass telephone shops, exchange offices and cafes if you have enough time. Many young men want to earn some money by taking your suitcases from you. To be on the safe side, you shouldn't give your luggage away. If someone gets too intrusive, it helps to get really loud so that the abundant security forces are alert and intervene immediately. The whole procedure can be quick, depending on how many planes arrive at the same time, but it can also take 1.5 hours.
On the return flight from Mombasa via Nairobi to Europe, you do not need to pick up your luggage. It is automatically transferred to the connecting flight.
  • Those who spend their vacation on the coast with a safari in Masai Mara National Reserve If you want to combine, you should consider coming to Kenya via Nairobi and driving from there directly to the National Park in order to save the high costs of the flight from Mombasa to the Maasai Mara Park and back.

By train

Who about Nairobi flies to Kenya, from there you can take the train to Mombasa drive. The fare (2018) is 10 euros (one-way). Since the trains can be very busy, it is advisable to organize a ticket in advance on the Internet. The correct passport number must be given for this. Ticket and passport are checked when entering the station. There are also baggage and security checks, which are only common in Germany at airports. If you drive from Nairobi to Mombasa, you cross the Nairobi National Park as well as Tsavo.

By bus

The cheapest means of transportation from Mombasa to Diani Beach are local Minibus taxis (Matatus). However, this is also associated with some circumstance. You take a Matatu from Mombasa city to the Likoni ferry (Ksh 30). From the Likoni ferry you take another Matatu to Ukunda (30 km, about Ksh 60) and from Ukunda to Diani Beach another Matatu (about 5 km, Ksh 30).

An alternative is that Hakuna Matata Bus Servicethat operates on the coast. A trip from Mombasa costs approximately Ksh 1000 and takes 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Who from Tanzania comes, can take a bus to Mombasa and ask the driver to drop him off in Ukunda.

In the street

Taxis from Mombasa city center to Diani Beach cost around Ksh 4000, from the airport a little more (Ksh 5000-6000). If you come with luggage, this is the only realistic way to get to Diani Beach. Most of the time, guests in the large hotels are picked up from the airport anyway. Travel time approx. 1-1.5 hours.

By boat

  • Large cruise ships call at the port of Mombasa. If you want to arrive with your own yacht, you should contact the Mombasa Yacht Club make informed about berths.
  • To get from the airport to Diani Beach, you have to take the ferry (Likoni Ferry) to cross an arm of the sea. This runs 24/7. It is very busy at rush hour. You have to take this ferry if you want to visit Mombasa from the south coast.

mobility

Minibus taxi "Matatu"
Three-wheel taxi "tuk tuk"
Motorcycle taxi "boda-boda"

Many travelers use the unsafe means of transport to save a few euros in accordance with the motto “greed is cool” or to feel like “locals”. Unfortunately this is only intended for the short term. One should really consider whether the risk is worth the small savings.

  • Minibuses (Matatus): drive up and down Diani Beach Road from early in the morning until late at night. They are best suited for longer journeys, e.g. to Mombasa. They are cheap, usually overcrowded, unsafe, and inconvenient.
  • Tricycle taxi (Tuktuk): They are approved for 2 people and are suitable for medium to short distances. They are more expensive than the Matatus, but cheaper than taxis and more often involved in accidents. Price approx. € 0.5 / km.
  • Motorcycle taxi (Boda-boda): they are the cheapest means of transport for short distances, but also the most dangerous. Unless you're very tight on cash, they should be avoided. Price approx. € 0.25 / km.
  • taxi: Regular taxis are the most convenient and safest means of transport. It's safest at night always to take a taxi. Price approx. € 1 km.
  • Driving services: A much cheaper alternative to the regular taxis are the driving services Over[1], Bolt[2], Little[3], Mondo Ride[4], MaraMoja[5].
  • Rental cars, mopeds: Renting a car is not recommended if you have no experience in the chaotic left-hand traffic in Kenya, unless you are hiring a driver. One can also Motorcycles, scooters or Quads rent, which is even more dangerous.
  • Air taxi. Tel.: 254 (0) 727 462 244. Flight from Diani airport to Mombasa airport in 15 minutes. If you want to save the long waiting time at the Likoni ferry or especially recommended for medical emergencies.

  • Kite surfing. at Nomads Hotel and on Galu Beach. Mwazaro Beach is also well suited for kite surfers.

  • getting there. Most vacationers who come to Kenya want to combine the beach with a safari tour. If you want to visit Masai Mara Park, it might be worth traveling to Kenya via Nairobi to save the high cost of flying from Ukunda to Masai Mara and back. Or, if you have enough time and want to keep costs down, book the safari tour from Diani to Tsavo, Amboseli, Nairobi, Naivasha, Masai Mara and then back to the coast by plane or train from Nairobi.
  • Ticketing. There are a number of reputable travel agencies in Diani Beach that organize safaris and have great experience - some even under management from German-speaking countries. This can be an advantage if you don't understand the “small print” in English. There are also illegal providers who work without a license and are cheaper. For your own safety you should give preference to the legal ones. For personal safety, the company should properly maintain and insure its vehicles and have an operating license. Good companies usually have their own office and the vehicles have a company logo that clearly identifies the mini bus / off-road vehicle as a company vehicle. For such safari operators, scams are much more difficult because they are easy to track. Company signs on the vehicles should be firmly mounted and not be interchangeable with a handle for the next car, as illegal providers like to do. If you want to book with the local safari providers on Diani Beach via the Internet (which is advisable due to the good local knowledge), you should inquire about several providers, because each company either works with different hotels or receives different conditions at the respective hotel. The prices depend heavily on the time of year, the hotel and the means of transport to the game drive. Camps in the park are more expensive than those outside. A lot of time is lost for the arrival and departure, and there are fewer opportunities to see animals on the Prischfahrten. Safaris in which you are accommodated in a minivan with 6 others are cheaper than if you are traveling with a few in an off-road vehicle. Individual trips are significantly better than group trips in a narrow minivan. During animal migration, prices are at the highest level. For good offers it is necessary to choose the travel time, the number of people, the accommodation in the respective park, the number of days you want to stay in the respective park and the type of transport jeep or minivan transport. Information about the price level of safaris: Kenya Safari Tours & Holidays. Some well-known German-speaking companies in Diani Beach are: African Bush & Beach Adventures, Bush & Beach Adventures, African Dream Safaris, Tembo Safaris ltd, DM. Tours & Safaris, Kiwara safaris, Lady M Safaris, Pitia Africa Tours, Wilderness Tours and Safaris, Wild Kenya safaris.
  • dress. Massai Mara is cooler than Tsavo Parks and Amboseli, sometimes below 10 oC in the morning and safari vehicles are usually open. From 9 a.m. it gets very warm, so a T-shirt and shorts are enough. That is why the "onion look" is recommended, for example zip-off pants, T-shirt and fleece jacket and a "multifunctional scarf" (as a headband against blowing hair when the jeep is open, hat when it is cool in the morning, scarf when it is on the routes in the Car pulls or because of the air conditioning, sun protection for head), possibly also hat / cap and gloves for sensitive people. It is also important to have sunscreen, sunglasses, mosquito repellants and enough batteries, as the electricity in the lodges is sometimes switched off overnight. Light shoes and / or flip-flops (to get on the seat). You only get out briefly, if at all, and don't wander around anyway. In the evenings in the camp, a fleece jacket and a jogging suit are comfortable. In Tsavo and Amboseli, short clothing plus a windbreaker, multifunctional cloth, mosquito and sun protection, sunglasses and spare batteries are sufficient. In the evening, if you want to sit outside a little longer, a jogging suit and possibly a windbreaker are sufficient.

money: Payment is made in Kenya in all shops, restaurants and pubs with Kenya shilling. Only some safari providers also take euros. It is now completely unnecessary to take US dollars with you, as it is still in old travel guides. You can exchange euros, US dollars and other currencies in any bank. At the airport, the rates are lower and it is better to only exchange small amounts on arrival. You can also swap in hotels, but the rates are usually worse than in banks. The easiest way to withdraw Kenya Shillings is from an ATM, which can be found at banks and large supermarkets. Before leaving, you should check with your bank to see if the card is valid in Kenya. It works fine with most cards. When buying goods in small shops, at street stalls or on the beach, you should have the right amount, as many try to cheat customers when changing.

The Main shopping area with boutiques and souvenirs is located along the 25 km long main street with more than a hundred local shops, three large shopping centers, many supermarkets and grocery stores. There are fewer shops during the rainy season, but generally all goods can be found. In Maasai Village, there are a variety of souvenirs to buy from pearls. The most beloved Souvenirs in Diani Beach are paintings, wood crafts, fabrics, kikoy, kanga, soapstone statues, handcrafted jewelry, traditional African, Arabic and Indian clothing and many others. The largest selection and best prices are in Mombasa, which you can visit as a day tour to buy souvenirs.

There's no need to be scared of going to the clubs or restaurants at night! For safety reasons, it's better to take it in the evening always a taxi from the hotel and back, not a tuktuk or motorcycle. One should refrain from walking through the darkness at night. Any restaurant can call a reliable taxi to take guests back to the hotel after dinner. All pubs and bars serve good food (see Nightlife) and there are many small, good and inexpensive restaurants. The menus mostly contain international dishes, often seafood, pizza, burgers, steak, etc. But there are also places where you can try local dishes.

nightlife

Beach bar

The nightlife at Diani Beach is inconsistent with the north coast of Thailand Mombasa or Mtwapa comparable. Diani Beach is more a place to relax than to party. Many hotels offer live music in the evening and some pubs are well worth a visit, as are various beach bars.

If you want to go back to the hotel at night, you should always order a taxi or let the club know. Every club (not the ladies in the club!) Knows trustworthy drivers. In addition, it is not advisable to wait on the street until a tuktuk or taxi happens to come by. Always wait directly at the hotel / bar / restaurant until the vehicle you have ordered drives up. accommodation

Hotel complex

  • Location of the hotels: Some of the hotels on the south coast are quite isolated and while offering quiet beach and pool holidays, they can also get boring. Others are closer to the nightlife and shopping malls. Since there are too many hotels, holiday homes, guest houses in Diani Beach to describe in detail, a look at Google Earth gives a good indication of which hotels are quiet and which are more active areas.
  • All inclusive: Due to the tropical climate you have to drink a lot and that can be expensive if you have not booked all-inclusive and have to buy the drinks in the hotels, especially with children. Prices for drinks (2019) in Ksh approx .: water (0.5l): 150-200, soft drinks: 250, beer (0.5l): 300-400, cocktails from 650 Half board it is good to have supermarkets and simple pubs close to the hotels to keep costs down as the drinks in the resorts are more expensive than outside. Hotels that offer all-inclusive, on the other hand, have more problems with drunk guests and also attract a corresponding clientele.
  • Private accommodation: You should have a good look at the location beforehand in Google Earth, as most of them are not on the beach.
  • Day guest at the beach hotel: Anyone who has rented a private holiday home, but would like to go to the well-kept hotel areas with sun loungers and pool etc., has to pay admission, which can be quite high depending on the resort (approx. 2500 Ksh / person including food and drinks with all-in -Hotels).
  • Hotel standards are in almost all respects not comparable with top European destinations like Mallorca.
  • Gäste mitbringen: Die großen All inklusive Hotels erlauben allesamt keine einheimischen Gäste im Hotel. Those who value this must therefore switch to smaller hotels without a “joiner fee”, in which companions can stay overnight at no additional cost. There are many tricks that the often inexperienced tourists do not know. 'The delusion is short, the regret is long' (Schiller). Going along as an alternative to the accommodation of the 'nice company' is a high risk. Here avarice is not cool, but stupid reckless. Many bargain hunters have already landed on the police stations, blank and with a complaint for rape, which is then only withdrawn against payment of a higher sum.

  • Zahnarzt: Im Diani Beach Hospital
These tablets help immediately and reliably.

Even if the majority are very friendly, you soon feel very annoyed. You should always just ignore them when you are spoken to on the beach, do not answer "no thanks" or anything else.
So you miss a lot of typical impressions.
A copy is also sufficient. Therefore, you should have a copy made at the hotel on the first day, which you can always take with you without fear of losing your ID. The important thing is the first page and the visa in the passport, which you receive on entry.
  • photos: Bevor man Fotos von Menschen machen will, sollte man vorher immer um Erlaubnis fragen. Photos of military and public facilities such as banks, ferries, etc. are forbidden. Strict action is taken here, so be careful!
  • At the beach: Je nach Gezeitenstand kann das Meer mitunter hohe Wellen haben. Currents and undercurrents are not to be underestimated.

  • Tsavo East National Park.
  • Tsavo West National Park.
  • Masai Mara National Reserve.
Neben der night-life Szene sind die Jumba ruins and the Creek worth seeing.
