To know
Second metropolis of the Russia, the area of St.Pietroburgo it is one of the richest in the world in terms of visitor attractions. In addition to the city itself, the three suburbs, Pushkin, Pavlovsk is Peterhof house three of the most spectacular palaces in the world, former country residences of the Tsars (Lomonosov it houses a less opulent palace, but also pleasantly less touristy than its own). Pushkin is also rich in literary history, being the site of the poet's school of the same name. The island city and naval base of Kronstadt make an interesting day trip from St Petersburg as it houses an impressive recently restored naval cathedral and was closed to all foreign travelers until the late 1990s.
Spoken languages
L'English is spoken in the city of St.Pietroburgo and in the main tourist centers, but don't expect a diffusion equal to that of Scandinavian countries, therefore a knowledge, albeit basic, of Russian can facilitate solo travel.
