History

Located at the foot of the sub-Vosges hills, the locality is established on an old Roman road, known as "Bergstrasse", connecting Wissembourg to Belfort. Inhabited under the Merovingians, Dorlisheim is cited in 737 in a deed of donation attributing the village to the abbey of Murbach. Other religious establishments have property there, including the monastery of Sainte-Odile, the Benedictine abbey of Altorf and the Lorraine convents of Hesse and Haute-Seille. This former estate of the Eguisheim family was passed down at the beginning of the 13th century.e century at the bishopric of Metz then at the bishopric of Strasbourg. Split up between several families, the seigneurial rights were gradually bought back by the city of Strasbourg, which introduced the Reformation in the village in 1525. Around 1600, the locality had an enclosure surrounded by a ditch filled with water. During the year 1632, the Austrian troops of General Montecucculi raze and completely destroy the village. It was not until the middle of the XIXe, with the development of the railway, then with the installation of Ettore Bugatti at the beginning of the XXe century, that the village is experiencing a new era of prosperity. From a denominational point of view, it is the only municipality in the canton of Molsheim with a Protestant majority.

The Protestant Church
  • Protestant Church  – Originally, the church was part of the endowment of the Abbey of Altorf, founded by the Counts of Eguisheim. In 1225, Bishop Berthold of Teck incorporated the building into the Cistercian abbey of Haute-Seille. The Reformation is introduced in Dorlisheim in the XVIe century, and the church was assigned to Protestant worship until 1685, when Louis XIV established the simultaneum. Despite its modest dimensions, the sanctuary built in several stages reveals a particularly complex structure. It consists of a triple nave of Romanesque origin, a Gothic bell tower-porch and a choir flanked by two square chapels. The bell tower-porch is an addition of the XIVe century hiding the Romanesque western portal. The archivolt is surmounted by two dragons with coiled tails, which open their mouths towards the head of a wild animal. The headband is adorned with a scroll of vine shoots and bunches of grapes flowing from the mouth of a figure representing Christ. Set back, two twists highlight the outline of the semicircular arch.
  • Saint-Laurent Church  – Putting an end to two centuries of simultaneum in Dorlisheim, the Catholic church was erected on the outskirts of the old town, in a garden whose owner was then of the Protestant faith. This neo-Romanesque church is adorned on the facade with statues of Joan of Arc and Saint-Martin. The interior is lit by large windows donated around 1912 by village notables, including Baron Hervé-Gruyer. Those of the choir evoke episodes from the life of Saint-Laurent. The organ, built in 1900 by Franz Kriess of Molsheim, is equipped with an electric fan donated by the car manufacturer Ettore Bugatti.
  • Bugatti Family Vault  – Established from 1909 on the borders of Dorlisheim, the Bugatti family remained very close to the village where the main members of the clan rest, Carlo Bugatti (1856-1940), patriarch of the family, and his wife Thérèse, née Lorioli, as well as their children: Deanice, Rembrandt and Ettore Bugatti (1881-1947). This one rests alongside his first wife Barbara Mascherpa. Finally, two children of Ettore Bugatti, L'Ebé and Jean (1909-1939), are also buried here.
  • Chateau Saint Jean Logo indicating a link to the website – Surrounded by a 6.5 hectare park, this manor house was built by the Wangen of Geroldseck [on the site of the former commandery. the house changed owners several times, before being finally used by Ettore Bugatti in the 1930s for his public meetings and receptions. Dominating the steps and the main staircase, the pediment proudly displays the motto Semper fidelis, always faithful. It is a private residence, it cannot be visited.
  • Castle of Baron Hervé  – According to an inscription on the vault of the cellar, this residence would have been erected in 1714. Restored in 1820, then transformed under the Second Empire by the addition of a round turret, it is flanked by two small outbuildings. The castle is built on a rectangular plan, with two levels of windows. Only the steps and the wrought iron balustrade seem to date back to the Baroque period, while the rest of the construction does not predate the end of the 19th century.e century. Property of the Protestant branch of Montbrison, the house then passed to the Hecht family, hence the pike serving as a weather vane for the turret, then to Baron Hervé-Gruyer.
  • Retirement Home Sarepta  – Founded in 1903 by Pastor Paul Ziegel-Meyer, the house of the Deaconesses was originally called Diakonessen Verein Sarepta. Between 1914 and 1917, the establishment will be transformed into a military hospital. The interwar period will mark the development of the care station because several pavilions will be built there. The community of Deacons dissolved in 1982. However, the elderly are still welcomed there. It is a private place that cannot be visited.
