Due to the location of Dornum close to the coast in East Friesland, tourism, especially measured in terms of overnight stays and visits to restaurants, is of considerable importance for the city in retail too. The city of Dornum (including its suburbs) has around 500,000 overnight stays per year. The Neßmersiel ferry port also belongs to the town of Dornum.

The city is located in the immediate vicinity of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park, which was established in 2009 together with the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park and the Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park, in which the for Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg belonging islands Neuwerk, Nieghörn and Scharhörn, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Neßmer Watt as well as the Dornumer Watt and the Dornumer Nacken are located immediately north of Dornum.

The administrative center in the main town is about twelve kilometers west of the town of Esens in the neighboring district of Wittmund and sixteen kilometers northeast of the town of Norden. The district town of Aurich is about 21 kilometers south. Dornum lies on the border of the historical regions of Norderland and Harlingerland: While the larger western part with the main town is part of the Norderland, the smaller eastern part belongs to the Harlingerland.

In addition to the main town of Dornum, the municipality of the same name also includes the districts Dornumergrode, Dornumersiel, Westeraccumersiel, Nesse, Neßmersiel, Westeraccum, Westdorf (with Ostdorf), Westerbur and Roggenstede.

Dornum synagogue

Today the only one is in Dornum Jewish synagogue in East Frisia. This is also a museum and a memorial for the Jews persecuted under National Socialism as well as the Reichsprogromnacht, during which numerous synagogues in and outside East Frisia were deliberately destroyed by arson. The museum shows the exhibition areas of culture, religion and the history of Jewish life. Two-Siele Museum

Christian churches

Bartholomäus Church in the center of Dornum is a national church that is often already known to tourists. It was built between the years 1270 and 1290, the bell tower dates from the 13th century. Under the church building there is a crypt in which the coffins of the chief family are housed. The organ of the church, which was completed in 1711, is the second largest organ in East Frisia.
